Another friend and fellow translator gave me a surprise birthday present of three hens a few years ago too, and I now have five (I bought two black ones last year to even out the colour scheme). The eggs are delicious, totally free range and I get so many that I have to give them away, and sometimes people give me back cakes or preserves or whatever in return. Which kind of makes up for the freeloading cat and dog...

Yes... and no! | Mar 22, 2015 |
I'm a pet sitter for my daughter Marta's dog during the week.
I had two beautiful lovebirds but they died some years ago. I knew that these birds have to live in pairs and that they bond with each other, when one died I didn't buy another one immediately and one week later...

"Popular belief"? | Mar 22, 2015 |
I know lots of freelancers where I am, and pet-owners are definitely the minority.
Maybe it's to do with living in a big city? Anyway, I'd never heard that one before.

Two dogs - permanent family members and a stray cat who drops by the edge of the garden and demands food from time to time when pickings are slim elsewhere I suppose

Popular belief? | Mar 22, 2015 |
Never heard about that "popular belief" before.
But yes, I do. Two cats. | | |
I used to have a cat, but was not allowed to keep her in my new appartment.
Anyway, it is ok. I feel freer without it, not having to find a babysitter every time I want to travel etc.

100% in agreement. Where did this so-called popular belief come from?
As a poll question, it's as innocent and entertaining as they come. Looking deeper, however, I should hope the poll author doesn't apply the same kind of silly logic to other areas of life. Here are some made-up popular beliefs:
a) All project managers know nothing about translation or interpretation
b) Translation agencies squeeze freelance translators as turnips until the last drop of blood
c) Translation companies exist only for profit
d) A supernatural being created all the languages of the world when people built a skyscraper
It's a fun Sunday here. | | |
