Dear All,
I am thinking of updating/consolidating my Terms&Conditions and would like to ask you:
- what discounts/surcharges do you apply?
- how do you calculate them?
- do you group them into the basic/secondary, always/randomly applicable ones or otherwise?
And also: how often doyou update your T&C? Is there any timing in the year better for this than the rest of the months/seasons/occasions?

And also: how often doyou update your T&C? Is there any timing in the year better for this than the rest of the months/seasons/occasions?
What is your idea about how good T&C should look and be handy for all the parties involved?
All your ideas to the point are very much welcome.
Thanks in advance! ▲ Collapse | | | Are you sure you need them? | Oct 26, 2021 |
I've been in the business for decades, and have never had them. My terms of payment are a couple of lines on my invoice, and any specific terms (such as surcharges for urgency or complex layouts, or advance payment for large jobs) can be agreed on a case-by-case basis.

I don't define anything in advance. Even my base rate varies a bit from client to client. Rush surcharges, technical work (formatting, OCR, etc.) surcharges, or any discounts are all discussed on a case-by-case basis. The only surcharge that's consistent in my practice is +50% for handwritten text.

Phil, I've decided I do.
I'm not a novice either and that might be the reason behind this: I'm getting tired of explaining on a case-by-case basis that 500 words on one page and the same 500 words distributed in 13 pages is not the same thing. Just one in a series of repating situations. | |

Like Phil Goddard I've been in the translation business for decades, and have never had them. My rates vary according to the language combination (I translate from English, French, Italian and Spanish exclusively into European Portuguese) and to the subject matter (my degree is in Economics but as I started out as a generalist, I touch diverse subjects, though I work mainly on EU issues). For new clients I have a simple quote form with my terms and conditions for that job and that client. I rare... No T&C here.
Discounts: None. Surcharges: None.
(Exceptions apply, but they are rare.)
Agency interest in keeping up with "updated" supplier T&C:s for dozens of translators is probably limited. | | | Adieu Ukrainian to English + ... Never had any in a document | Oct 27, 2021 |
Handwritten: +100% & no discounts, priced by output word count
Rush: +30%, but almost never manage to get anyone to agree to it | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Updating my T&C - ideas? CafeTran Espresso |
