Since I purchased Trados 2009 I have created several translation memories. They all worked nicely but recently, when I open a new document for translation, Trados won't find any of them, and even if I add them manually, they seem to be opened, yet they won't update when I translate and accept new segments (yes, I did tick the update option).
Now, this is what happens when I open Trados again with the partly translated document:

Trados (message): Could not open translation memory [name of the TM]. The requested data file could not be located. This translation memory will be disabled.
Me: ???

Any suggestions will be more than welcome.

Did you move the physical file? Oct 28, 2010

This message indicates that Studio cannot find the TM at the location it was when you first assigned it or that the file is somehow corrupted. Check that the file is still there. In the Project Settings remove the TM and add it again by pointing to the current location of the physical TM file. If you still get an error message, then probably the TM is corrupted and needs to be recreated.

Why do you wonder? And how is this question related to this thread?

Thank you Walter for enlightening me I have to admit, I did change the location of this file, so surely this might be the case.
Now Trados opens the TM without any problems. Does this mean then, that I cannot under any circumstances change the location of the TM once it has been created? Sounds odd to me.

How should Studio find a file that you have moved? Oct 29, 2010

Why odd? This is nothing more than logical!
You told Studio that it should use a TM that is located in folder 'E:\Trados memories' for example. Studio will then access and update the physical file that is there. Later, you move the file somewhere else. Can you tell me how on earth Studio should now guess where you moved this file to? It will not be able to find it anymore.
This is not specific to Studio, you would have the same problem in every other application.

New suggestion for Trados developers Oct 29, 2010

Suggestion for Trados developers: a psychic feature on sp4. So Trados may find all necessary files on any folder of your computer or even on a pen drive in your pocket.

Maybe you should not even have to setup the software. Just leave the trados disc next to your computer and tell it: "do the job!"

Just kidding, guys

This is a good suggestion and would also apply to other software ... if we still would use CDs, which we do less and less. SDL does not ship any CDs anymore. It's all by download.

But there is another way of doing it: install a voice recognition SW on the PC, download the installation file to any folder on your PC and then say to the PC in a loud voice: "Please install Studio SP3" and watch it going on.....

The good thing about it is that if for any reasons it fails, you can also loudly shout at the computer cursing it, which might help free your frustration

No, Ewa, it's not as bad as that!

If you have moved the TM, Studio will be unable to open it for your project but you can go to the Project Settings, click on Language Pairs in the navigation tree, then All Language Pairs, and reselect your TM in its new location from the Translation Memory and Automated Translation pane.

Excellent idea!

They could call it the "PTO" function, in honour of the recently deceased psychic cephalopod, Paul the Octopus

Do you remember where you stored it? Mar 28, 2011

Click on the 'Project Settings' button, navigate to 'Translation Memory and Automated Translation' at the level 'All Language Pairs', click on 'Add' and and your TM. Of course, you need to remember where you stored the physical file (on which drive and in which folder).

If you don't you should be able to find out by looking at the project settings of your previous projects or by doing a search for files with the extension .SDLTM.

Looking for TM's in Trados 2009 Mar 28, 2011

Dear Elda,

In the [Editor] view you may choose menu item [Tools] and then [Options...]. You will see a frame devided into two parts. On the left side there will be a list of headlines. You may choose [Language pairs] and [All language pares] or some particular language pair. In your case it may be English to Albanian or Albanian to Greek, etc. After you click on the relevant line [Translation Memory and Automated Translation] (with a drum on the icon - with green left side and yellow right side) you will hopefully see your translation memory options.

On the top ride side of the frame there will be menu items: [Add], [Create], [Settings...], [Remove], etc. If there is no Translation Memory file pointed there, you may either click [Add] and try to find TM file (if it already exists somewhere in your computer), or you may click [Create] and fill in the form with source and target languages, name and location of your brand new TM file. You will be able to find (or place) your TM file in the directory/Folder/Sub-folder you prefer. It is also helpful to click [Settongs...] in this mode from time to time, as it makes it possible to check, how the number of translation units in your TM increase. Your will be also able to check the location of your TM file there, if you need it for any reason and forget.

I also think, that when you open MS Word source file in your Trados for future translation, a form to choose an existing TM or to create a new one should appear.

Nikolay "Sanych" Remizov.
