Source text - German Bei der Vergasung wird aufbereitete feste oder flüssige Biomasse unter hohen Prozesstemperaturen möglichst vollständig in ein hochkalorisches biogenes Gas umgewandelt (Rohgas, Schwachgas). Bei der Vergasung wird der Biomasse weniger Sauerstoff über ein Vergasungsmittel zugeführt als für eine vollständige Verbrennung erforderlich wäre (partielle Oxidation, unterstöchiometrisch). Eine Prozesswärmezufuhr ist notwendig, da bei der Vergasung mehrheitlich endotherme chemische Reaktionen ablaufen, d.h. Reaktionen, die Energiezufuhr von außen benötigen. Als Vergasungsmittel werden Luft, Sauerstoff, Wasserdampf oder Kohlendioxid verwendet. Nachteilig ist beim Einsatz von Luft der hohe Inertgasanteil im Rohgas. Für die Herstellung von synthetischem Kraftstoff kommen daher meist reiner Sauerstoff oder Wasserdampf zum Einsatz.
Der Vorgang der Vergasung lässt sich grob in vier verschiedene Bereiche aufteilen. Zunächst findet eine Aufheizung und Trocknung des Brennstoffs bei Temperaturen bis ca. 200°C statt. Anschließend erfolgt die pyrolytische Zersetzung. Dabei entstehen in Abwesenheit von Sauerstoff bei ungefähr 200–500°C gasförmige Kohlen-wasserstoffverbindungen, Pyrolyseöle und Pyrolysekoks. Anschließend kommt es zur Oxidation. Bei Temperaturen von ca. 2.000°C erfolgt die Aufspaltung des Koks und eines Teils der höheren Kohlenwasserstoffe in kleinere gasförmige Moleküle (CO, H2, CO2, CH4 und Wasserdampf). Durch die sich anschließende Reduktion von Kohlendioxid und Wasser wird der größte Teil der brennbaren Bestandteile des Rohgases gebildet. Dieses besteht hauptsächlich aus Kohlenstoffmonoxid und Wasserstoff, Kohlendioxid, Methan, höheren Kohlenwasserstoffen sowie Wasserdampf und gegebenenfalls Stickstoff. Die Gaszusammensetzung ist abhängig von der Art der Vergasung, vom Vergasungsmittel (Art und Menge) und von den Reaktionsbedingungen (Temperatur und Druck; Sterner, 2007; Kaltschmitt und Hartmann, 2003). Neben diesen Hauptkomponenten (CO, CO2, H2, CH4, C2-Kohlenstoffverbindungen, Wasserdampf, N2) enthält das bei der Vergasung entstehende Gas noch verschiedene Schadkomponenten (Teere, Partikel, Alkalien, Schwefel-, Halogen- und Stickstoffverbindungen), die vor der weiteren Verwendung des Rohgases entfernt werden müssen. Diese zum Teil sehr aufwändige Reinigung des Gases ist das Nadelöhr für die Entwicklung und Markteinführung von Vergasern im dezentralen Bereich (Kaltschmitt und Hartmann, 2003; Knoeff, 2005).
Das ungereinigte Gas kann direkt in Brennern zur Wärmebereitstellung eingesetzt werden. Für die Strombereitstellung ist eine Gasreinigung notwendig, da das direkt verwendete Rohgas den Motor stark verunreinigen und funktionsunfähig machen würde. Die Möglichkeiten zur Verstromung von Reingas sind vielfältig: Es kann als Dieselsubstitut in einem Dieselmotor beigefeuert oder pur in Gasmotoren oder ‑turbinen mit gekoppelten Generatoren verstromt werden. Weiter besteht die Möglichkeit, das Reingas über Brennstoffzellen zur Strombereitstellung zu nutzen. Hierbei sind die Entwicklungen unter Verwendung von Solid-Oxid Fuel Cells (SOFC) am weitesten vorangeschritten (Aravind, 2006; IISc, 2006). Es gibt viele weitere Verwendungsmöglichkeiten, die an dieser Stelle nicht näher erläutert werden. Alternativ kann das gereinigte Gas nach einer weiteren Aufbereitung (insbesondere der Einstellung des erforderlichen H2/CO-Verhältnisses) einer Synthese zugeführt werden und in flüssige Energieträger (Fischer-Tropsch-Diesel, Ethanol, Methanol) oder verwendbare biogene Gase (Biomethan, Dimethylether, Wasserstoff) umgewandelt werden (Vogel, 2006).
In Indien und China werden Holzvergaser zur Strom- und Wärmeerzeugung bereits länger erfolgreich eingesetzt (IISc, 2006). In den Industrieländern sind die Umweltauflagen (Luft- und Wasser-emissionen) für die Anlagen in der Regel höher angesetzt, weshalb es bisher nur vereinzelt Vergasungsanlagen im kommerziellen Maßstab zur Strom- und Wärmeerzeugung gibt (Vogel, 2007). Dabei handelt es sich jedoch nur um technische Probleme der Gasreinigung, die lösbar und meist nur eine Frage der Kosten sind. Biomassevergasungsanlagen sind der Kernprozess in der Herstellung von synthetischen Biokraftstoffen, die auch Biokraftstoffe der 2. Generation genannt werden. Vor der Vergasung des Biomasserohstoffs muss dieser gegebenenfalls zerkleinert und getrocknet werden. Das im Vergasungsprozess gebildete Rohgas wird gereinigt und konditioniert, d.h. es werden Verunreinigungen wie Teere, Partikel oder Schwefelverbindungen entfernt (Reingas) und die für die Kraftstoffsynthese notwendige Gaszusammensetzung eingestellt. Das so gewonnene Synthesegas wird über eine Synthese in den gewünschten Kraftstoff gewandelt. Es gibt verschiedene Synthesen: Die Fischer-Tropsch-Synthese wandelt Synthesegas in ein Fischer-Tropsch-Rohprodukt, das durch anschließende Aufbereitung zu gebrauchsfertigem Fischer-Tropsch-Diesel-Kraftstoff, welcher oft als BtL-Diesel (Biomass-to-Liquid-Diesel) bezeichnet wird, weiterveredelt wird. Die Methanisierung (Methansynthese) wandelt Synthesegas in Methan und Kohlendioxid. Das CO2 muss dabei abgetrennt werden und kann eingelagert werden (Kasten 7.2-2). Diese Prozesskette ist energieaufwändig und verlustreich: Die Produktion von Fischer-Tropsch-Diesel erfordert den zweifachen Wechsel des Aggregatszustandes der meist festen Biomasse in einen gasförmigen und schließlich flüssigen Energieträger, wobei nur noch ca. die Hälfte der ursprünglichen Bioenergie im Endprodukt BtL-Diesel enthalten ist (Sterner, 2007). Biomethan lässt sich effizienter produzieren, da das Endprodukt gasförmig ist. Das Ausgangsprodukt ist in vielen Fällen holzartige Biomasse wie Hackschnitzel, die jedoch über die direkte Verbrennung zur Strom- und Wärmebereitstellung besser genutzt werden können als zur Produktion von synthetischen Kraftstoffen über die Vergasung. Diese ist energetisch nur sinnvoll, wenn als Biomasserohstoff eine schwierig zu verarbeitende Biomasse verwendet wird.
Die Entwicklung von Biomassevergasungsanlagen zur Produktion von synthetischen Kraftstoffen befindet sich in den Vorreiterländern Deutschland, Schweden und Österreich noch im Pilot- und Demonstrationsstatus. Erste kommerzielle Anlagen entstehen zurzeit, ein volkswirtschaftlich relevanter Beitrag ist frühestens ab 2020 zu erwarten. Besonders erfolgversprechend hinsichtlich der Energieausbeute sind hochintegrierte Verfahren, in denen eine ausgereifte Wirbelschichtvergasung zur Polygeneration von Strom, Wärme und Kraftstoff (synthetischem Biomethan) eingesetzt wird (Choren, 2007; Chemrec, 2007; TU Vienna, 2007).
Translation - English In gasification, prepared biomass in solid or liquid form is converted under high process temperatures as completely as possible into a high-caloric biogenic gas (raw gas, weak gas). For the gasification process less oxygen is fed to the biomass via a gasification agent than would be required for complete combustion (partial or substoichiometric oxidation). A supply of process heat is required since the reactions occurring in the gasification are predominantly endothermic, i.e. they require an addition of energy from without. Air, oxygen, water vapour and carbon dioxide are used as gasification agents. A disadvantage of air is the high proportion of inert gas obtained in the raw gas. For synthetic fuel manufacture pure oxygen or water vapour is therefore mostly used.
The gasification process can be divided broadly into four separate stages. Firstly the fuel is heated and dried at temperatures of up to 200°C. This is followed by pyrolytic decomposition: At approx. 200–500°C in the absence of oxygen, gaseous hydrocarbon compounds, pyrolysis oils and pyrolysis coke are formed. The next stage is oxidation, in which at temperatures of approx. 2000°C the coke and some of the higher hydrocarbons split into smaller gaseous molecules (CO, H2, CO2, CH4 and water vapour). The largest fraction of the combustible components of the raw gas is formed in the subsequent reduction of carbon dioxide and water. This consists principally of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, higher hydrocarbons and water vapour and in some cases nitrogen. The composition of the gas depends on the type of gasification, the gasification agent (type and quantity) and the conditions for the reaction (temperature and pressure; Sterner, 2007; Kaltschmitt and Hartmann, 2003). In addition to these main components (CO, CO2, H2, CH4, C2 carbon compounds, water vapour, N2), the gas resulting from gasification also contains various harmful components (tars, particles, bases and sulphur, halogen and nitrogen compounds), which must be removed from the raw gas before it is used further. Some aspects of this cleaning of the gas are complex and form the bottleneck in the development and market introduction of gasifiers in the local sector (Kaltschmitt and Hartmann, 2003; Knoeff, 2005).
The uncleaned gas can be used directly in burners to provide heat. For electricity generation it must however be cleaned, since if used directly the raw gas would severely contaminate the engine and render it inoperable. Various possibilities exist for converting the clean gas to electricity: it can be burnt as a diesel substitute component in a diesel engine, or used in its pure form in gas engines or gas turbines coupled to generators. It is also possible to use the clean gas in fuel cells to provide electricity. The most advanced developments in this area are those based on solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFC) (Aravind, 2006; IISc, 2006). There are many further possible uses that are not discussed here. Alternatively, following further preparation (to achieve the required H2/CO ratio in particular) the cleaned gas can be fed into a synthesis and converted into liquid energy carriers (Fischer-Tropsch diesel, ethanol, methanol) or useful biogenic gases (biomethane, dimethyl ether, hydrogen) (Vogel, 2006).
In India and China wood-gas generators have been in successful use for electricity and heat generation for a longer period. In the industrialized countries the environmental regulations (air and water emissions) for the plant are more stringent as a rule, and for this reason there have been up to now only a small number of commercial-scale gasification plant for electricity and heat generation (Vogel, 2007). This is however only a technical problem concerning the cleaning of the gas, one that is solvable and mainly only a question of cost. Biomass gasification plants are the core process in the production of synthetic biofuels, also known as 2nd-generation biofuels. In some cases the biomass feedstock must be shredded and dried before gasification. The raw gas formed in the gasification process is cleaned and conditioned, i.e. impurities such as tars, particles or sulphur compounds are removed (clean gas) and the composition of the gas is adjusted to suit the fuel synthesis. The synthesis gas thus obtained is converted in a synthesis process into the desired fuel. There are various types of synthesis: the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis converts synthesis gas into a raw Fischer-Tropsch product that is further refined by additional processes to useable Fischer-Tropsch diesel fuel, often known as BtL (biomass-to-liquid) diesel. Methanation (methane synthesis) converts synthesis gas into methane and carbon dioxide. The CO2 must be separated off and can be stored (Box 7.2-2). This process chain is energy-intensive and lossy: The production of Fischer-Tropsch diesel requires the double conversion of normally solid biomass into first a gaseous and then a liquid energy carrier, such that the final product of BtL diesel contains only approximately half the original bioenergy (Sterner, 2007). Biomethane can be more efficiently produced in that the final product is a gas. In many cases the starting product is woody biomass such as wood chips that nevertheless can be better deployed in direct combustion for electricity and heat provision than in synthetic fuel production by gasification. The latter is advantageous only where the feedstock used is a biomass that is difficult to process.
The development of biomass gasification plant for synthetic fuel production in the countries in which it is being pioneered (Germany, Sweden and Austria) is still at the pilot and demonstration stage. The first commercial plant are now appearing, but a significant contribution to the economy from this technology cannot be expected before 2020 at the earliest. Particularly promising as regards energy yield are highly integrated processes in which a technically mature fluidized bed gasification process is used for the polygeneration of electricity, heat and fuel (synthetic biomethane) (Choren, 2007; Chemrec, 2007; TU Vienna, 2007).

Source text - German Im Haupttest wurden die sieben ausgewählten Systeme einer eingehenden Laboruntersuchung unterzogen: Beim Solarmodul wurde die tatsächliche Leistung mit den Herstellerangaben verglichen. Die Batterien bzw. Akkus wurden auf ihre Kapazität geprüft, bei den NiMH-Akkus wurde zudem ein Haltbarkeitstest durchgeführt. Der Laderegler wurde auf Wirkungsgrad und Entladungsschutz untersucht, ebenso der Wirkungsgrad des Vorschaltgeräts, bei den CFL-Lampen kam zudem ein Zyklentest auf Schaltfestigkeit hinzu. Im Zentrum der Laboruntersuchung standen allerdings die lichttechnischen Prüfungen wie Messungen des Lichtstroms, der Lichtausbeute und Berechnungen zur solaren Deckungsrate der Leuchten. Abschließend wurde die maximale Leuchtdauer bei voller Batterie gemessen.
Neben der technischen Prüfung wurden die Betriebskosten der Produkte ermittelt, und zwar sowohl anhand der Lebensdauer der enthaltenen Batterien, als auch anhand der tatsächlichen Lichtleistung. Während die Berechnung der monatlichen Betriebskosten anhand der Lebensdauer für typische Kunden nachzuvollziehen sein sollte (die diese direkt mit den Kosten für Petroleum und Kerzen vergleichen können), stellt die Kalkulation der gemessenen Lebenslichtleistung höhere Ansprüche - ist aber diejenige, anhand derer die Preiswürdigkeit der Systeme am gerechtesten ermittelt werden kann. Um einen Maßstab für das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis zu erhalten, muss man die im Test ermittelten Betriebskosten in Relation zu anderen Beleuchtungsmitteln setzen (siehe Tabelle 1). Allerdings können die ermittelten Betriebskosten nur als ungefähre Berechnungsgrundlage dienen: dies liegt vor allem daran, dass die Batteriehaltbarkeit nur recht grob geschätzt werden kann.

While the calculation of monthly running costs based on lifetime should be structured in terms of a typical customer’s use (to allow a direct comparison with the costs of paraffin or candles), the calculation of measured light output poses higher demands - yet is the one on which the affordability of the systems can most fairly be established. To get a yardstick for the price-to-performance ratio, the running costs obtained in the test must be placed in relation to other forms of lighting (see Table 1). However, the running costs obtained can only be considered an approximate basis for calculation: this is primarily because the durability of the battery can only be estimated very crudely.

Арабская культура пережила такой расцвет в VIII—XII вв., внеся свой заметный вклад в культурный подъем эпохи Возрождения. Затем, в силу исторически обусловленных причин, ее развитие сильно затормозилось.
Новый этап в движении по восходящей линии социально-политической и культурной жизни арабов начинается на исходе XVIII столетия, после французской экспедиции в Египет и Сирию (1798—1801), результатом которой, в частности, оказалось значительное расширение контактов арабского мира с капиталистическим Западом. С этого времени, в силу ряда исторических обстоятельств, Египет выступает как ведущая страна всего Арабского Востока. Египетская литература выдвигается на первое место и становится наиболее влиятельной среди близких ей по историческим судьбам литератур Сирии и Ливана. Но уже с середины ХIX века наряду с Египтом стали выделяться Сирия и Ливан, в то время представлявшие собой единую страну. «В Сирии и Египте XIX века начинается период большою оживления, которое захватило, главным образом, Ливан с центром в Бейруте», — писал И. Translation - English There are periods in the history of every nation in which its achievements become a substantial component of world civilisation. Arab culture enjoyed such a flowering in the eighth to twelfth centuries, during which it made its distinctive contribution to the cultural ascent of the Renaissance. Then, for reasons determined by history, its development slowed sharply.
A new stage in the ascent of Arab sociopolitical and cultural life began at the close of the eighteenth century, following the French expedition to Egypt and Syria (1798-1801). This resulted, in particular, in considerably increased contact between the Arab world and the West. From this time, and owing to a series of historical factors, Egypt emerged as the leading country of the Arab East. Egyptian literature moved into first place and became the most influential among the literatures closest to it in historical destiny: those of Syria and Lebanon. By the mid-nineteenth century, however, Syria and Lebanon, which at the time were a single country, began to excel alongside Egypt. The Orientalist Ignaty Yulianovich Krachkovsky wrote: “In Syria and Egypt in the nineteenth century there began a period of great revival that concentrated, in the main, on Lebanon with its centre at Beirut.”
By the beginning of the nineteenth century Beirut already stood out from other Arab cities for its developed trade, its blossoming in artisan and skilled crafts and its Europeanised appearance. This was frequently remarked upon by visiting European travellers. “Beirut can be briefly characterised thus: of all Asiatic cities it is the least Asiatic; of all cities of the East it is the most European”, the Italian-French writer Princess Cristina Belgioioso (1806-71) noted in her diary. There are also accounts by Europeans of Lebanon as a whole. In their reminiscences the French writer Alphonse de Lamartin, the Austrian Arabist Alfred von Kremer, the Russian consul Konstantin Bazili and others not only admired Lebanon’s natural features and its favourable geographical position, but also remarked on the high level of culture among the inhabitants of Beirut in comparison with other Arab peoples.
Gradually Beirut became an outpost of Western culture in the East. The penetration of European missionary activity also increased, and although the primary aim of the missionaries was to build and disseminate the influence of the countries they represented in the economic and intellectual lives of the Arabs, pursuing this policy also facilitated the spreading of cultural enlightenment.
A number of literary, public and academic organisations were set up in Lebanon. A new periodical press made its presence widely known and facilitated the appearance of journalism as a genre. Journalism, with its topical content and social and political themes, then provided the basis on which a new imaginative literature could develop. Much interest was also being shown in translations from European languages at this time.

The balance and symmetry calmed the senator's nerves, which had been agitated both by the unevenness of domestic life and the impotent turning of the wheels of the state.
His tastes were noted for their harmonic simplicity.

The dark shadows moved off. But the hellish taverns remained. For many long years the Orthodox people revelled with a phantom: the mongrel stock left the islands -- neither people nor shadow -- settling on the border of two mutually alien worlds.
Apollon Apollonovich did not like the islands: the people there were crude factory people; there a human swarm of thousands shuffled each morning to the many-chimneyed factories; and now he knew that the Browning circulated there, and a few other things besides.
A degree in electrical engineering and another in translation studies sets me up as a technical translator. In the technical field my interest has always been renewable energy and ecological themes of all kinds, both technical and social and cultural. The imminent climate crisis makes this all the more urgent.
Other interests that inform my translation activities include Russia and its many worlds, including many other of the former Soviet republics, various aspects of spirituality, and classical music. In the early 1990s I ran a small Anglo-Russian magazine and have been informally involved in various exchanges with Russian groups over the years.
My dream would be to be a translator of poetry (and a poet myself!). And to learn a brace of new languages, possibly Arabic and Persian.
Work aside, I am a keen cyclist, runner, baker and gardener.
