Source text - English The xDrive permanent four-wheel drive takes charge of applying the engine's power to the road or ground, with the drive torque split variably between the front and rear wheels. The xDrive fourwheel drive is underpinned by the new Dynamic Performance Control on the BMW X6: this ensures that the power is also distributed appropriately between the right and left wheel. This drive technology, which BMW is using for the first time here, increases agility, driving stability and traction, thus heightening the customer's driving pleasure in everyday driving situations, too. If there is a risk of oversteering, xDrive reduces the amount of drive torque at the rear wheels that seek to push the car outwards. Dynamic Performance Control in addition reduces the drive torque at whichever rear wheel is on the outside of the bend – because its centrifugal force will be particularly high – and diverts it to the rear wheel on the inside of the bend. Conversely, the tendency to understeer that is particularly noticeable in four-wheel-drive vehicles with a high centre of gravity is also suppressed. xDrive reduces the power diverted to the front wheels which want to push outwards; meanwhile Dynamic Performance Control shifts the drive torque's emphasis towards the rear wheel on the outside of the bend, thus stabilising the car. A technical innovation compared with similar systems is that the torque is now distributed variably by Dynamic Performance Control even when the driver abruptly moves off the accelerator on a bend. But could I – a city softie – armed with a Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited, tackle the Alaskan wilderness, a state that makes Yellowstone look like Central Park? This trip will put the DNA of the Jeep Wrangler to the test. Everyone who talks about Alaska begins in the same place – the landscape is so indescribably big, the distances so vast and mountains so overwhelming that they warp even the most reasonable sense of scale. Everywhere else, distances seem to be measured in millimetres compared with Alaska’s endless kilometres. The old joke is, cut the state of Alaska in half and Texas would still only be the third largest state in the USA. The truth is, statistics fall short in conveying anything meaningful about the place. To know Alaska, you have to be there.
