Source text - English Education is central to sustainable development and one of the most powerful instruments known to reduce poverty and inequality. It is therefore no surprise that two of the eight XXX Goals focus on education and that the UNESCO has named 2005-2015 the Decade for Education for Sustainable Development.
However, globally, more than a hundred million children still do not have any access to schooling and a significant proportion of them reside in poor countries. The lack of basic education means that young people have fewer choices and opportunities to break out of the cycle of poverty. This calls for a more concerted effort towards achieving universal education by governments, bilateral and multilateral aid organisations, civil society, the private sector and individuals.
Providing access to education, particularly for children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds is one of the central focuses of XXX’s corporate sustainability initiatives in the community. XXX is the first global education initiative of its kind within the Bank and it is gratifying to note the tremendous level of interest that already exists for the programme across the Group.
Through XXX, our aim is to enable children from the most marginalised and disadvantaged communities to access opportunities for their own advancement.
In the past year, the programme has supported a diverse range of initiatives from improving quality of education in remote and rural areas in Lebanon, South Africa, Pakistan and Malaysia to mainstreaming street and working children into regular school in India, working with children affected by war in Lebanon and earthquake victims in Indonesia, art and music workshops in France, entrepreneurship education in Sri Lanka, employment-oriented training in Mexico, Vietnam and Argentina, and much more.
I am confident that in the long term, XXX will create a new generation of confident, capable and responsible individuals who will drive the sustainable development agenda in their countries and communities.
Going forward, we hope that XXX will have your enthusiasm and involvement so that it can continue to support a large number of disadvantaged children and thereby contribute significantly to the global endeavour of combating child poverty.
Translation - Spanish La educación es esencial para lograr un desarrollo sustentable y uno de los más poderosos instrumentos que se conocen para reducir la pobreza y la inequidad. Por lo tanto no es de extrañarse que dos de los ocho objetivos de XXX se centren en la educación y que la UNESCO haya declarado el período comprendido entre los años 2005 – 2015 como la Década de la Educación para un Desarrollo Sustentable.
Sin embargo, a nivel mundial, más de cien millones de niños todavía no tienen ningún acceso a la escolarización y un porcentaje significativo de ellos vive en países pobres. La falta de educación básica significa que los jóvenes tienen menos posibilidades y oportunidades de salir del círculo de pobreza. Esta problemática demanda un mayor esfuerzo conjunto para lograr una educación universal de parte de los gobiernos, organizaciones de ayuda bilateral y multilateral, sociedades civiles, sectores privados e individuos en particular.
Proporcionar acceso a la educación, especialmente a niños y jóvenes de escasos recursos, es uno de los temas centrales de las iniciativas de sustentabilidad en la comunidad. XXX es la primera iniciativa para la educación a nivel mundial en su tipo en el banco y resulta gratificante observar el inmenso grado de interés que ya existe por este programa dentro del grupo
El objetivo de XXX es posibilitar que los niños de las comunidades más marginadas y necesitadas tengan acceso a oportunidades para su propio desarrollo.
El año pasado, el programa apoyó una amplia gama de iniciativas desde mejorar la calidad de la educación en áreas remotas y rurales en el Líbano, Sudáfrica, Pakistán y Malasia hasta reintegrar a niños de la calle o trabajadores a clases regulares en la India, trabajando con niños afectados por la guerra en el Líbano y las víctimas de terremotos en Indonesia, talleres de arte y música en Francia, iniciativas de educación en Sri Lanka, capacitación laboral en México, Vietnam y Argentina y mucho más.
Tengo la certeza de que a largo plazo el programa XXX creará una nueva generación de personas más seguras, capaces y responsables que manejarán la agenda de desarrollo sustentable en sus países y comunidades.
En el futuro, esperamos que se involucren en el programa XXX con entusiasmo para poder seguir ayudando a un gran número de niños necesitados y de este modo contribuir significativamente con este esfuerzo mundial por combatir la pobreza infantil.
