USAFSS assignments: National Security Agency, Far East, North Africa, Europe. Civilian instructor of basic Russian to SAC (Strategic Air Command) pilots and crews under USAF contract with Univ. of Dayton, Dayton, OH, while translating at the Foreign Technology Division, Wright-Patterson AFB; 70 years experience as Russian-to-English translator, in military service, industry, and full-time freelancer since 1966, covering virtually all fields. Regularly translated some 70 journals cover-to-cover or in part for: Consultants Bureau/Plenum Press, 40 plus years; Allerton Press, 30 plus year; Petroleum Abstracts/American Petroleum Institute, 25 years; Maik Nauka/Interperiodica, 8 years; others: NASA, Biological Abstracts, Bureau of Fisheries, Russian Academy of Sciences papers translated into English for publication etc. Translate(d) journals on the following subjects: acoustics, astronomy, astrophysics, atomic energy, biochemistry, marine biology, bioorganic chemistry, experimental biology and medicine, nondestructive testing, ecology, electrochemistry, environmental sciences, glass physics and chemistry, glass and ceramics, semiconductors, low-temperature physics, plasma physics, solid-state physics, human physiology, plant physiology and pathology, materials science, mining, genetics, hydraulic engineering, engineering physics, fluid dynamics, inorganic materials, biological sciences, molecular biology, biotechnology, cytology, chemical and petroleum engineering, forestry, high-energy chemistry, space research, crystallography, lithology and mineral resources, magnetohydrodynamics, polymer mechanics, composite materials, ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy, microbiology, neurophysiology, refractories, developmental biology, soil mechanics and foundation engineering, soil science, powder metallurgy and cermets, applied biochemistry and microbiology, biophysics, strength of materials, radiochemistry, water resources, spectroscopy, seismology, earthquake engineering and prediction, virology, desertification, space sciences, agricultural sciences, geology and geophysics, immunology, friction and wear, machine sciences, meteorology and hydrology, oceanography, superhard materials, and others; translated a dozen or so books on exobiology, helicopter engineering, forest fires, earthquake engineering, environmental hazards of metals, metallurgy, etc.; for many years abstracted numerous Russian medical and biological journals for Biological Abstracts.
At 90, it's been a great enlightening career, when few of us "Russianized"Americans, mostly ex-military, carried the translation load of then-free exchange of scientific/technical journals with little terminology sources to draw upon. |
