Nueve días y 12 horas. Eso fue lo que el atleta Jonathan Aucacama se tardó en recorrer 1.000 kilómetros y cinco provincias del país, para convertirse en el primer deportista ecuatoriano en cumplir ese reto.
Y lo hizo con un objetivo claro: recaudar 50 mil dólares para su fundación, Rurashun, que ayuda a niños y jóvenes en situaciones vulnerables y enrumbarlos en el atletismo. Si bien la hazaña de Aucacama fue en noviembre de 2019 (y no logró juntar el dinero requerido), el latacungueño estrenó su documental, titulado ‘Quién corre por mis venas’, que narra el arduo recorrido que varió entre carrera, caminata y trote.
“Todos me decían ‘¡Te vas a morir!’. Sabía que había un riesgo muy alto en correr 1.000 kilómetros pero quise tomar el reto. Cuando llegué a la meta, ya en Quito, solo me desplomé. Los últimos 8 kilómetros empecé a ver borroso, perdí la consciencia y seguí corriendo por inercia”, contó Aucacama.
La motivación del deportista, cuya carrera en el atletismo se ha basado en ser guía de atletas con discapacidad visual, fue su duro pasado. No conoció a su padre y su madre falleció cuando él tenía 15 años, a causa de un derrame cerebral.
Se quedó a cargo de cuatro hermanas y aprendió a sobrevivir en la calle. “Desde niño sabía que quería ser deportista. Pero lo perdí todo cuando era muy joven. Sé lo que es pasar hambre, dormir en la calle y salir adelante por mi propia cuenta”.
Con el apoyo de una institución académica (en la que Aucacama logró obtener su título de licenciatura en Deportes), el velocista, de 25 años, pudo cumplir su hazaña y llevarla a la pantalla, bajo el mando del cineasta Erick Jiménez.
El documental ‘Quién corre por mis venas’ está disponible en la página de Facebook de la fundación Rurashun y su proyección tiene un costo de 5 dólares. Todo lo recaudado obtenido por los cinéfilos será donado a la misma causa.
Durante el trayecto del corredor, incluso le pidió matrimonio a su hoy esposa, Sarah, quien lo acompañó en gran parte del recorrido. Se casaron en marzo a través de una ceremonia por una plataforma de internet.

Translation - English He Ran a Thousand K to Help Others!
Nine days and twelve hours. That’s how long it took Jonathan Aucama to trudge through a thousand kilometres and five Ecuadorian provinces- thus becoming the only Ecuadorian athlete to accomplish the feat.
And he did so with a very clear goal- to raise fifty thousand American dollars (thirty-nine thousand British pounds) for his very own charity, called Rurashun, whose aim is to help troubled youth and kids through sport. Aucama completed this Herculean task in November, 2019 (but did not meet his fundraising goals). The Latacunga native also released Quién corre por mis venas (Who Runs Through my Veins), a documentary that chronicles the athlete’s arduous trek, which was completed through a combination of running, walking, and trotting.
“Everyone kept on telling me ‘you’re going to die!’. I knew that running a thousand kilometres was risky, but I wanted a challenge. When I got to my final destination, Quito, I simply collapsed. My vision went all blurry and I lost consciousness during the last eight kilometres- I only continued running because of inertia,” noted Aucama.
The athlete’s driving force, whose career has been centred on aiding visually handicapped athletes, is his difficult past. He never met his father and his mother died from a stroke when he was only fifteen.
He thus became his four sisters’ guardian and had to learn to survive on the streets. “Ever since I was a kid, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in sports. But I lost everything when I was very young. I know what it’s like to be hungry, to have to sleep on the streets, and to have to fend for yourself.”
It was with an academic institution’s backing (the same one through which Aucama obtained his Bachelor of Sports Science degree from), that the twenty-five-year-old runner was able to accomplish this incredible feat and film it alongside director Erick Jiménez.
Quién corre por mis venas (Who Runs Through my Veins) can be viewed via Rurashun’s Facebook page and for five U.S. dollars. All proceeds go to the charity.
The runner even proposed to his wife, Sarah, who accompanied him through his athletic odyssey, during his run. They married in March via an internet ceremony.
I'm a relative newcomer to the world of translation- I was born in Quito, Ecuador, but raised in the Canadian prairies (Calgary). During my Junior High years, I attended French Immersion and continue to hold a passion for the French language, as well as a love for all things French.
