Source text - English All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.
The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?
No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists
but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. Translation - Czech V dnešní době je veškeré cestování pouhým prostředkem pro přemisťování fotoaparátu sem a tam, a všichni cestovatelé jsou v zajetí všemocného objektivu. Staromódní návštěvníci, kteří jen chtějí stát a pozorovat prostým zrakem, bývají odsouváni stranou fotografy. Ti považují za samozřejmé, že zatímco rituálně zaostřují, nikdo se nesmí hýbat ani zakrývat jejich výhled. Podivínské duše bez fotoaparátu musejí ustoupit těm, kteří jsou náležitě vybaveni, musejí postávat, zatímco probíhají snímkovací rituály, a musejí čekat na svou příležitost, zatímco poblíž zastaví plné autokary a davy turistů zamoří krajinu duchem všech automatických fotoaparátů. A obyvatelé celých zemí, když se cítí kanibalizováni, spolknuti nebo vysáti zírajícím a ocelově mrkajícím černým okem, ždímají z kanibalů maximum. Chcete snímek mého domu či velblouda? Tak plaťte!
Nic z toho by zřejmě nevadilo, pokud by se tím něčeho podstatného dosáhlo. Tedy pokud by všechno to neustálé pobíhání a cvakání spouště nakonec vytvořilo něco, co předtím nikdy neexistovalo, např. obrazy zachycené krásy nebo zvěčněné pravdy. Tak tomu ale bohužel není. Fotoaparát je jen jakousi čmáranicí na zdi převlečenou do seriózního hávu.
Fotoaparát slouží jako prostředek, jímž se na vše viditelné otiskneme pod rouškou zaznamenávání divů světa, které již byly úchvatně zaznamenány profesionály, a které se prodávají v knihkupectví nebo trafice na každém rohu. Ale jak by to doma vypadalo, kdybychom tetě Květě ukázali pohledy toskánské krajiny bez našich těl či tváří, které dosvědčují, že jsme tam doopravdy byli?
Žádný kus skály totiž není pravdivý, pokud na ní nestojím já. Žádný pomník neexistuje bez mé ženy, která se o něj opírá. Žádný chrám není zajímavý, pokud se vedle něj neusmívá můj obličej. Pomocí fotoaparátu lze vše nádherné odcizit, přivlastnit, zmenšit, ochočit, reprodukovat a pověsit na holé zdi obývacího pokoje. Snímky slouží jako důkaz pro vybraný okruh přátel, známých a členů rodiny o jedné absolutně důležité skutečnosti, která se těchto krás týká: Přišel jsem, viděl jsem, vyfotografoval jsem – proto existují.

Source text - English When my wife told me she was pregnant, I got that stomach-churning sensation that hits you on a plunging roller coaster. I was excited, yes, but... oh my God. Parenting was for, well, parents.
So here I stand, bug-eyed and sweating buckets like some poorly-drawn cartoon character, the question marks floating in the air around my head while I try to prepare myself for the complete care and responsibility of another living being besides my cat. I'm responsible for making sure this little human doesn't grow up and turn into a complete monster. If the child turns out a social moron-- my fault. If the babe can't find Luxembourg on the map, blame me for not providing a better education. They'll need therapy, and of course that will be on my head too. So many opportunities for wrong turns!
I remember the day my father sat me down and awkwardly told me about the birds and the bees; it was perhaps the most excruciating and embarrassing half hour of both our lives. I can't do that to another human being.
Maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself here. I can do this, I say; I'll be a great father. My child will be reared a well-rounded, educated, upstanding citizen of the world, and he or she won't hate me.
And then I imagine the baby, still safe within the confines of my wife's belly, suddenly opening an alarmed eye as the thought enters his or her mind: "What if my dad just can't hack it?
Translation - Czech Když mi žena sdělila, že je těhotná, pocítil jsem stejné sevření žaludku jako při náhlé jízdě dolů na horské dráze. Měl jsem z toho velkou radost, to jistě, ale ... ježkovy oči. Rodičovství je přece pro ... no, pro rodiče.
Takže jsem tam stál s očima navrch hlavy, potil se jak v sauně podobně jako špatně nakreslený komiksový hrdina a hlavou se mi honila spousta otázek. Zároveň jsem se pokoušel vzpamatovat a připravit na trvalou péči a odpovědnost za jiného živého tvora (tedy kromě kočky). Teď jsem byl najednou zodpovědný za to, aby ten človíček vyrostl a nestal se z něj nějaký netvor. A stane-li se z našeho dítěte asociál, bude to moje chyba. Nenajde-li Lucembursko na mapě, můžete mě žalovat z neposkytnutí lepšího vzdělání. Budou potřebovat terapii, to samosebou také padne na mou hlavu. Vždyť existuje tolik možností, jak se vydat špatným směrem!
Ještě si pamatuji na den, kdy mě otec usadil a neobratně mi vyprávěl o ptácích a včelách. Zřejmě se jednalo o tu netrýznivější a nejtrapnější půlhodinu v našem životě. Takovou věc bych už nemohl nikomu jinému udělat.
Možná se vám zdá, že jsem trochu předbíhal událostem. Říkal jsem si, dokážu to a budu skvělým otcem! Naše dítě vyroste a stane se z něho dobře vychovaný, vzdělaný a bezúhonný občan této planety, aniž by ke mně chovalo nenávist.
A pak jsem si děťátko představil – stále ještě v bezpečí bříška mé ženy, jak náhle otevře vylekaná očička při vnuknutí neodbytné myšlenky: „A co když to táta přece jen nedokáže?“

Zároveň s tím, jak linuxové hnutí postupuje a prosazuje svobodný software ve světě, se vytváří jemná rovnováha. Úspěch Linuxu a programů open source spočívá v udržení míru mezi dvěma extrémy: dobrovolnými programátory, jako je Nick Walker, který celé noci píše zdrojový text s cílem změnit svět, a komerčními lidmi, jako je Jeffrey Birnbaum z Morgan Stanley, jenž svobodný software používá s cílem ušetřit peníze. Source text - Czech Celé Saudkovo dílo je velmi soukromé a on sám je v něm velmi snadno zranitelný. Neustále riskuje, e se divák, a u z rozpaků, pruderie či nepochopení můe začít zlobit i smát. A toto riziko si po celý svůj ivot uvědomuje. Ale a u jeho fotografie pojednávají sebechoulostivějí a sebespornějí stránky lidského bytí, ve svém úhrnu jsou mohutnou oslavou lidství. A je to právě toto svérázně drádivé vzývání člověčenství, jemu nic lidského není cizí, co Jana Saudka činí zcela jedinečnou postavou současné fotografie.
Translation - English The whole of Saudek's work is very intimate and he is quite easily vulnerable to it himself. He is constantly taking chances that the viewer starts laughing or becomes angry—be it due to embarrassment, stuffiness or misunderstanding. And he has been aware of this risk all his life. But whether his photographs deal with most tender emotions or the questionable sides of human being, as a whole, they are a massive celebration of humanness. And it is this very original, provocative adoration of manhood—to which anything human is not strange—that makes Jan Saudek a very unique character in contemporary photography.

I am a full-time translator and localizer since May 1996 when I started an 11-month contract (localization of the Windows NT 4 operating system into Czech) with Microsoft WPGI (Worldwide Products Group Ireland). After the successful completion of this project I continued translating and localizing on a freelance basis.
