French to English: Narrative Exposure Therapy Detailed field: Psychology
Source text - French I spent the last couple of days undergoing a training in Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET). This is a technique used with victims of torture, trauma and violence that suffer from PTSD. Because of the way our brain stores our memories during a trauma, victims find it difficult to recall the event in an organized and detailed way. Due to the high levels of cortisol in the brain and the hyperactivity of the amygdala, the hippocampus fails to do its actual job: storing events as cold memories that is, in an organized and chronological way. Thus, traumas are stored as hot memories that are fragmented, blurry and with no particular recall for time and space. The aim of NET is to help clients rewrite their narrative by transforming hot memories into cold memories.
