Source text - English Once upon a time there was an old king who fell ill, and as he was lying in pain he tought, "This bed I'm lying on will be my deathbed.' And he said, 'Send for Faithful Johannes - I want to speak to him.'
Faithful Johannes was his favourite servant. He had that name because he'd been true and loyal to the king all his life long.
When he came into the king's bedroom the king beckoned him close to the bed, and said, 'My good and faithful Johannes, I'm not long for this world. The only thing that troubles me is my son. He's a good lad, but he's young, and he doesn't always know what's best for him. I won't be able to close my eyes in peace unless you promise to be like a foster father to him, and teach him all he ought to know.
Faithful Johannes said, 'I"ll do that gladly. I won't forsake him, and I'll serve him faithfully even if it costs me my life.'
Translation - French Il était une fois un vieux roi qui tomba malade. Alors qu’il souffrait, allongé sur son lit, il songea : « Ce lit sur lequel je gis sera mon lit de mort. » Il ordonna alors : « Appelez Jean le Fidèle, je désire lui parler. »
Jean le Fidèle était son serviteur préféré. On l’appelait ainsi parce que toute sa vie, sa fidélité et sa loyauté envers le roi avaient été sans égales. Quand il arriva au chevet du roi, celui-ci lui fit signe d’approcher et dit : « Mon bon et fidèle Jean, je vais bientôt quitter ce monde. La seule chose qui m’inquiète encore, c’est mon fils. C’est un gentil garçon, mais il est jeune et il ne sait pas toujours ce qui est bon pour lui. Je ne pourrai partir en paix que si tu me promets de te comporter comme son père adoptif et de lui enseigner tout ce qu’il doit savoir. »
Jean le Fidèle répondit : « Je le ferai avec joie. Je ne l’abandonnerai pas et je le servirai fidèlement, même au péril de ma vie."
