Source text - English David Blayney Brown staged an outstanding and successful exhibition Turner and the Alps at the Foundation in 1999. Twenty-four years later he is curating Turner : The Sun is God. Through seven themes the exhibition sheds light on different aspects of Turner’s artistic development and celebrates his fascination with light and atmosphere. In the final weeks of his life, Turner famously declared ”The Sun is God”, inspiring the title of the exhibition, and hinting at the artist’s devotion to capturing this ubiquitous force.
Translation - French David Blayney Brown signait en 1999 une remarquable exposition : Turner et les Alpes et remportait un grand succès. 24 ans plus tard, il assure à nouveau le commissariat de cette exposition proposant plusieurs thèmes illustrés par les huiles, les aquarelles et les gouaches de cet illustre artiste dont l’œuvre oscille entre romantisme et impressionnisme. Parmi toutes ces techniques, la sélection démontre à quel point l’aquarelle joue un rôle capital dans sa manière de capturer l’intensité des forces de la nature avec une expressivité inégalée.

Source text - German Die Reisen durch Großbritannien und Europa waren von großer Bedeutung für Turners künstlerische Entwicklung. Obwohl er vorzog im Atelier zu malen, wurden die Strichzeichnungen, Skizzen und Aquarelle, die im Freien entstanden, zu gespeicherten Erinnerungen. Er benutzte sie für fantasievolle Kompositionen, nicht als direkte Abbildnisse der Wirklichkeit sondern als szenische Teilelemente in der vollendeten Bildkonstruktion. Oft verschmolz er vergangene Begebenheiten oder mythologische Erzählungen mit Landschaft. Ein Beispiel ist das Bild The Devil’s Bridge and Schöllenen Gorge, eine Skizze, die Turner während seiner Reise durch die Schweizer Alpen 1802 ausgeführt hatte. Das Bild zeigt die neu aufgebaute Version der spektakulären Teufelsbrücke, die während der Schlacht zwischen den französischen und russischen Truppen 1799 zerstört wurde und die Turner während einer kurzen Kampfpause während der Kriege unter Napoleon (1801-1803) erleben konnte.
Translation - French Les voyages que Turner entreprend en Grande-Bretagne et en Europe se révèlent une source d’inspiration inépuisable pour ses peintures de paysages. Les croquis réalisés en plein air constituent une source qui alimente ses dessins et ses aquarelles réalisés en atelier. Il les agrémente de récits mythologiques ou historiques pour créer des paysages spectaculaires où l’imagination le dispute à la mémoire. Turner n’a jamais visité la Grèce, et pourtant certains tableaux reflètent avec justesse son atmosphère à la fois fantastique, son ciel éclatant et ses dieux solaires. Dans ce premier thème, on peut admirer l’aquarelle et la gouache sur papier de Turner illustrant : Le Pont du Diable et les gorges de Schöllenen, mine de plomb, aquarelle et gouache fondée sur des études lors de la visite de Turner en Suisse. Il entend parler de cette gorge vertigineuse désarmant celui qui s’hasarde à la reproduire ! Ce gouffre traversé par le Pont du Diable impressionne fortement Turner. Reconstruit après avoir été détruit en 1799 lors d’un affrontement des Russes menés par Souvarof contre le puissant ennemi français, ce pont devient éponyme de la bataille sanglante du Pont du Diable. Elle alimente l’imagination de Turner qui en 1802 place des soldats parsemés dans la gorge dans un décor terrifiant d’une nature dramatisée !
