English to Portuguese: Angels and Demons 'harmless', says Vatican General field: Other Detailed field: Journalism
Source text - English Da Vinci Code sequel Angels and Demons is "harmless entertainment," according to the Vatican's official newspaper.
In a piece in Wednesday's edition, it called Ron Howard's film "a videogame that first of all sparks curiosity and is also, maybe, a bit of fun."
Following Angels' premiere in Rome on Monday, however, L'Osservatore Romano broke its silence to concede the film was "gripping" with "splendid" visuals.
In essence, the paper said, the movie was "a gigantic and smart commercial operation" filled with historical inaccuracies and "stereotyped characters".
It suggested the church should consider rethinking the way it presents itself in the media, rather than regarding the success of the works of author Dan Brown as a threat.
"It would probably be an exaggeration to consider the books an alarm bell," the newspaper opined.
"But maybe they should be a stimulus to rethink and refresh the way the Church uses the media to explain its positions on today's burning issues."
Many Catholics were unhappy with The Da Vinci Code, which suggested Jesus married Mary Magdalene and had children.
In Angels and Demons, however, Harvard academic Robert Langdon - played by Tom Hanks in both films - comes to the aid of the church when it is threatened by an ancient cult.
"The theme is always the same: a sect versus the church," said L'Osservatore on Wednesday.
"This time, the church is on the side of the good guys."

No entanto, após a estréia de Anjos e Demônios em Roma, numa segunda-feira, L'Osservatore Romano quebrou seu silêncio ao admitir que o filme era "envolvente" e continha recursos visuais "esplêndidos".
O jornal disse, principalmente, que o filme foi "uma operação comercial gigantesca e inteligente" cheio de imprecisões históricas e "personagens estereotipados".
Isso leva a crer que a igreja deveria repensar na forma em como se apresenta à mídia, em vez de julgar o sucesso das obras de Dan Brown como uma ameaça.
"Provavelmente seria um exagero considerar os livros como um alarme," opinou o jornal.
"Mas talvez eles deveriam ser um estímulo para repensar e renovar a forma como a Igreja emprega a mídia para explicar suas posições sobre questões cruciais dos dias de hoje."
Muitos católicos ficaram descontentes com O Código da Vinci, que insinuou que Jesus foi casado com Maria Madalena e tiveram filhos.
Porém, em Anjos e Demônios um professor universitário de Harvard, Robert Langdon (interpretado por Tom Hanks em ambos os filmes) vai a benefício da igreja quando ela é ameaçada por um antigo culto.
"O tema é sempre o mesmo: uma seita contra a igreja," L'Osservatore afirmou na quarta-feira.
"Desta vez, a Igreja está do lado dos bons."
