I have dual citizenship in both the US and Switzerland, having lived in Zurich, Winterthur, and Stein am Rhein for 16 years, then moving to Corsica, where I was the official French-English translator for polyphony singing group I Muvrini. I've been a working as a translator since 1996, primarily with agencies in Switzerland, though also with a few direct clients, such as the Historisches Seminar der Universität Zürich.
Although I have an M.A. in Communication Arts (Psychology of Art), my translation skills were learned on the job and by living in a German-speaking land for so many years. I also have a certain insider view of Switzerland and an appreciation for the culture. My job experience in Switzerland included positions as publications manager for the International Student Travel Association (ISTC), assistant to the legal/claims department of Swiss Re ZH for five years (working specifically with long-latent pollution claims), and many years of teaching English as a second language.
My favorite aspect of translation--besides the people, of course!--is the unexpected nature of the job. You just never know what's coming around the bend. I pride myself on my ability to tackle all sorts of writing styles, from straight journalism and academic works to polished promotional material, advertising, and dialogue.
In my non-translation time, I'm a weaver and knitter, doodler, and storyteller. I'm studying classical feng shui and real estate, and have plans to move from Missouri back to California.
