Source text - Italian La Via Francigena è uno degli itinerari più anticamente documentati che collega l’Europa all’italia per raggiungere i luoghi della Fede: la Terrasanta, Roma, San Giacomo di Compostella (Santiago de Compostela).
Parte da Canterbury, percorre la contea del Kent, arriva alla Manica, prosegue lungo le regioni francesi, varca la frontiera Svizzera e, in Italia, si snoda attraverso le regioni della Valle d’Aosta, Piemonte, Lombardia, Liguria, Emilia Romagna, Toscana e Lazio.
La sua origine risale all’età in cui i longobardi stabilirono il proprio dominio sull’Italia settentrionale e centro-meridionale (VI sec.) e cercavano un percorso sicuro, lontano dai più comodi itinerari romagnoli e liguri ormai controllati dai nemici bizantini. Quando poi ai Longobardi subentrarono i Franchi, il percorso venne ampliato e consolidato in direzione della Francia e in direzione di Roma e del papato. È pertanto un insieme di possibili strade da percorrere, diverse a seconda delle vicende politiche, topografiche e climatiche delle varie zone ma confluenti tra di loro in alcuni punti nodali. È nel percorso storico effettuato nel 990 d.C. dall’Arcivescovo di Canterbury, Sigerico, che la Via Francigena trova una sua unitarietà. Nel Diario di Sigerico, le memorie che narrano il viaggio di ritorno da Roma, dove si era recato in pellegrinaggio per ricevere dal papa il “pallio”, o mantello vescovile, lasciano una breve descrizione delle 79 tappe, o Submansiones.
Translation - English The Via Francigena starts in Canterbury, County of Kent in England and stretches as far as the English Channel, continues in France, crosses the Border with Switzerland and reaches Italy making its way through the Italian Regions of Aosta Valley, Piedmont, Lombardy, Liguria, Emilia Romagna, Tuscany and Lazio.
The origins date back to the ages in which the Longobards established their power in Italy (6th Century. A.D). They were trying to establish a safe path, far from the already existing routes of Emilia Romagna and Liguria controlled by their enemies, the Byzantines. When the Longobard dominion ended and the Franks took power, the route was extended and consolidated towards France to one end and Rome and the Pontifical State to the other.
The above mentioned events make the Via Francigena an ensemble of traversable paths connected one to the other, even though undergoing different historical and political events and facing various climatic and topographical occurrences throughout the centuries.
It is in 990 A.D. during the historic journey of Sigeric “the Serious” -Archbishop of Canterbury- that the Via Francigena finds its own homogeneity. In the Diary of Sigeric, the memories narrate his return travels to Rome where he had been to receive the “pallio”-papal mantle- and be consecrated. Sigeric related the trip and segmented it into 79 stops called submansio.
