Source text - English The inherent reactivity of Mg combined with vapor pressure leads to oxidation and the burning of the molten metal in the air. Cover gases are used to form a protective barrier between the Mg and oxygen. Some early options included “Foundry Flux,” a eutectic mixture of MgCl2 and other chloride salts, which contaminated the cast product and released corrosive gases in the foundry, and Sulfur Dioxide, mixed with air often by burning elemental sulfur under furnace covers, which not only produced a toxic, irritant vapor that polluted the air, but also, in poor control situations, caused explosions.
In the late 1970s a new product was introduced, which provided a non-toxic, non-corrosive, low-cost alternatives to these -- SF6. Used at 0.1~0.5% in air, CO2, N2, or blends thereof, it was quickly adopted and has been widely used throughout the industry. SF6 works by breaking down F and F2 generated in the surface film of oxidized magnesium, and the separated F and F2 pass through the oxidized Mg and disperse, reacting with the Mg to create a high-density cover film. This cover layer of oxidized Mg with fluoride makes the oxidation process extremely slow, preventing the Mg fires.
However, around 1990, SF6 was discovered to be the most potent GHG (GreenHouse Gas) ever evaluated. With a GWP (Global Warming Potential) of 24,900 and a Lifetime of 3,200 years, SF6 forced the industry to evaluate alternative products. In 1997 the International Magnesium Association (IMA) was created, and after publishing guidelines for SF6 conservation, it appointed a committee to investigate SF6 alternatives. Currently, the IMA is a partner for the US EPA’s campaign to reduce the use of SF6, and funds a research program at SINTEF -- The Foundation of Scientific and Industrial Research at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
Of the proposed SF6 alternatives evaluated, the most promising candidates are FK, HFC3, HFE 7100, and HFE 7200 (see chart below). The IMA is also using Computational Fluid Dynamics to investigate the most efficient delivery method of these gases to the melt surface.

I am a native speaker of both English and Japanese, having grown up in Japan until coming to America for college, yet being educated in English all along. My mother is Japanese and my father was American.
I worked part-time as an interpreter/translator during college, then upon graduating in 1994, I began working for an automotive parts manufacturer, translating the drawings (blueprints) that were sent from Japan and interpreting for meetings when they had Japanese visitors.
I also freelanced for several years, translating patents, manuals, and other technical documents. Interpretation was not limited to my home base in Michigan -- I was flown to various places in the USA, Canada, Mexico, and Japan by my clients to ensure accurate communication in key meetings.
In 2001, just before the tragedy of 9-11, I was hired by another automotive parts manufacturer (ironically, a direct competitor of my first client) and worked there until early 2009, when the downturn in the economy necessitated that they lay me off. I am currently working freelance, primarily on translations, with some interpretation locally.
I am familiar with: injection molding, die casting (Al, Mg, Zn), stamping, welding, mechanical parts assembly, testing, woodworking, and TPS (Toyota Production System). I can use SDL Trados but am more comfortable with Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
