Edificio Centro de Congresos

Edificio Auditorio

Source text - French La ville de Columbus, dans l’Etat d’Ohio (USA), a accueilli du 6 au 8 mars 2009 la 21e édition du traditionnel Festival des Sports d’Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Le célèbre bodybuilder, acteur et actuel Gouverneur de Californie avait organisé la première édition de cet événement en 1989, en compagnie de Jim Lorimer, notamment ancien Président du Comité Olympique américain et actuel Vice-Maire de Worthington, Ohio.
Ce dernier avait rencontré Arnold pour la première en 1970 fois lorsqu’il l’avait invité à participer au concours de Mr. World, titre qu’il remporte justement à Columbus, avant de remporter quelques semaines plus tard son premier titre de Mr. Olympia à New York.
A partir de cette rencontre, les deux hommes se lient d’une grande amitié qui culmine avec la création du premier Arnold Classic, compétition professionnelle et lucrative de culturisme pour hommes et femmes. Depuis, la compétition n’a cessé de grandir pour devenir, avec les années, une foire du sport et un rendez-vous pour bien d’autres disciplines sportives.
Aujourd’hui, le Arnold Sports Festival est le plus grand événement multisports aux USA avec pour l’édition 2009, 37 sports représentés, dont 12 olympiques. Cette année, plus de 17'000 athlètes y ont pris part et plus de 180'000 spectateurs ont suivi les différentes disciplines. Les médias locaux et nationaux jouent un rôle considérable, puisque la manifestation est suivie par une grande audience TV et beaucoup de sponsors y prennent part.

Benjamin Bratton a remporté le tournoi en battant Jon Normile en finale. Adam Watson et Daniel Rees se sont classés troisièmes.
Ce rendez-vous a surtout servi de promotion pour l’escrime, puisqu’une démonstration a eu lieu sur la scène centrale du festival et Arnold Schwarzenegger a assisté à la cérémonie de remise des prix remettant lui-même les trophées aux finalistes.
Les fans d’escrime ont également eu l’occasion de saluer la présence de 5 médaillés olympiques américains : Mariel Zagunis, Sada Jacobson, Hanna Thompson, Erinn Smart et Keeth Smart, venus spécialement pour promouvoir notre sport, présenter les médailles ou encore signer des autographes.

The famous bodybuilder, actor and current Governor of California organised the first event in 1989, together with Jim Lorimer, former President of the American Olympic Committee and current Vice-Mayor of Worthington, Ohio.
He met Arnold for the first time 1970 when he invited him to participate in the Mr. World contest, a title which he justifiably won in Columbus, before winning his first Mr. Olympia title in New York a few weeks later.
After this first meeting, the two men struck up a great friendship which culminated with the creation of the first Arnold Classic, a professional and lucrative cultural competition for men and women. Since then, the competition has continued to grow over the years and has now become an sports fair and a meeting place for many other sporting disciplines.
Today, the Arnold Sports Festival is the largest multi-sport event in the USA, with 37 sports represented in 2009, of which 12 were Olympic. This year, more than 17 000 athletes took part and more than 180 000 spectators observed the different disciplines. The local and national media play a considerable part, as the event is followed by a large TV audience with many sponsors taking part.
The fencing event, known in the festival as the Arnold Fencing Classic and taking place for the sixth time, has consisted up until now of a competition for young people between the ages of 6 and 14 using the three weapons. The best young fencer receives amongst other things a scholarship of 2000$ offered by the Columbus Rotary Club.
This year for the first time, the fencing competition has been appointed by the FIE as the Satellite World Cup. The fencers from 8 countries faced each other in the men’s Epee tournament and it was the Americans, with the most competitors, who dominated the matches. Benjamin Bratton won the tournament when he beat Jon Normile in the final. Adam Watson and Daniel Rees came third.
This event above all had the benefit of promoting fencing, as a demonstration took place in the central stage of the festival and Arnold Schwarzenegger attended the prize-giving ceremony, personally handing out the trophies to the finalists.
