I stay clear of that obnoxious device at all times. | | | neilmac Spain Local time: 16:56 Spanish to English + ...
Not "watch" per se, but I might occasionally have a football or match (or similar) quietly on in the background (when working my back is to the TV) and turn briefly around to see the action replay of the odd goal, etc.
So sue me.

Me too. There are some great shows, for example on the Discovery channels or the BBC, that I've found very helpful when doing technical or scientific translations.
I also enjoy watching TV as a leisure pursuit and currently find series like Homeland, Game of Thrones or Fringe an ideal way to unwind after a long day's translation, as they are all shown at around 10-10.30 pm hereabouts. It's a cheap activity and harms no one.
Anecdotally, I have some friends who are anti-television and their ignorance of things like current affairs and/or popular culture (trashy or otherwise) is sometimes appalling. | | | Thayenga Germany Local time: 16:56 Member (2009) English to German + ...
"Never" was my choice, but that's not always true. At least not when it comes to "professionally" watching TV.
The basic/rough translation of e. g. an educational TV show's dialogue is followed by, sometimes, hours of watching "TV" for the actual lip-synx "fine tuning". After having watched a clip so many times that I almost know the dialogues by heart, all TV activities are postponed ... indefinately. | |

Neat, another Fringe fan. I watched all 4 seasons and awaiting 5th season from the local public library.
I'm a fan of some BBC programming, like Top Gear and I'd sometimes watch The Graham Norton Show. | | | Jeff Whittaker United States Local time: 10:56 Spanish to English + ... Man constantly mentioning he doesn't own a TV | May 8, 2013 |
Like the man in the attached article, people are proud of the fact that they do not watch TV. The anti-TV comments some of the respondents so strenously endorse are a bit extreme. Do we have Luddites in our midst?
Or maybe extreme vegans or animal rights activists?
All in moderation, folks, all in moderation, whatever floats your boat.
Just remember that watching or not watching TV is not a virtue/vice situation. We are not more virtuous than the rest just because we refuse to watch TV.

The thing is running all day long, usually from an adjacent room next to my office. It provides the white noise and the human voices that I miss so much since I don't work at an office any longer. I will pick a rather quiet show (no shooting, yelling, bombastic music or canned laughter) and it feels like people babbling in another room. Nice! I can't work with music - I tend to get distracted by the lyrics. I also don't listen to classical music out of respect for the great composers. Classical ... and I am perfectly fine without it. I can't work with radio or tv switched on.
It was quite funny when one my old neighbours found out I didn't have one, firstly she said 'oh poor you!' and then kept on inviting me to her house to watch it. | | | Nicole Schnell United States Local time: 07:56 English to German + ... In memoriam I did that for nearly a decade | May 9, 2013 |

I didn't even own a TV. Now my new house, while close to downtown, is located in an absolute quiet area in a cul-de-sac: There are no cars, no children playing, hardly any voices on the street - and I realized that humans are not cut out for perfect silence. My office cat doesn't yell much, and the dominant birds in my yard are Blue Jays whose lovely sounds resemble pretty much fingernails scraping across a chalkboard... you need SOME other noise to tune them out.
Edited for typo: "theM out". Ooops!

When you post such a link, please warn people that this is not about news and facts, but satire only. Let's be nice...
