I don't have a TV and don't plan to get me one.
I love (to make) music, but hardly ever listen to music while working, I often listen to the radio, but only during pauses.
I have it on in the background with the sound off. | | | | NataliaAnne Brazil Local time: 05:58 Portuguese to English Translating vs other tasks | May 8, 2013 |
As people may remember from my thread about family distractions and working from home, I can’t stand noise or interruptions while translating. However, when I read the question I understood it as applying to work in a general sense. After all, checking accounts, writing invoices, updating glossaries, formatting files etc are all ‘work’ but not tasks that need my full and undivided attention with no background noise.
(But, just for the record, I’m very anti-TV anyway!)

If you watch TV while you work, you do both things badly! [Edited at 2013-05-08 08:56 GMT]
We women multitask all the time: doing the washing up while talking on the phone, while keeping an eye on the kids, while listening out for the doorbell!!!!
Although I agree: TV and translation don't mix!
Actually, Alexander is right on the money. The human brain does not actually multitask but it gives you the impression that it does. There are some neuroscientific articles for public consumption that discuss this fact.
I could also claim that I multitask when I drive around while listening to the radio and simultaneously pay attention to the road and glance at my GPS (satnav) system positioned at eye level. We are forgetting that things like driving become second nature (as it were) after years of practice. The mind does a wonderful job at automating certain tasks so that we can concentrate on a new one.
If you disagree, try this: when you drive, consider if you are consciously thinking about every step of parking, or putting the car on reverse, or calculating the following distance or when to merge into a lane when you enter a highway (freeway here in America). It's not multitasking.

Depending on the amount of required concentration, I may have the TV on with low sound or on mute. Certain translation tasks are so easy that I can indulge in background TV noise. Since my living room-office is pretty large (about 400 sq feet), my desk in on one end and the large screen TV is on the other. It's the perfect arrangement!

Having said that, I noticed with puzzlement some of the anti-TV comments. I can only speak for myself, but I enjoy TV because I am very selective with what I want to watch. Some of my choices are science- or documentary-oriented. I learn a great deal by watching Modern Marvels, How it's Made and similar shows on cable. I also have a long queue of programs on Netflix which include art, science or graphic design topics, such as the wonderful Helvetica movie.
I also like some of the programs on the History Channel, but I conscientiously avoid reality TV programming. I seldom watch the news (too depressing) and I focus on humor TV instead, such as The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report and some stand-up comedy (like Gabriel Iglesias and Jeff Dunham) on Comedy Central. I am a big consumer of Nickelodeon cartoons (old episodes of The Last Airbender, Spongebob Squarepants, Back at the Barnyard, Invader Zim, etc.) and classic cartoons when I have the chance.
I wonder if those who are so anti-TV have replaced their viewing habit with others, such as tablets, smartphones, Wii consoles, texting while driving or phoning while driving without using a hands-free earbud. Just sayin'. ▲ Collapse | | | NataliaAnne Brazil Local time: 05:58 Portuguese to English
Interesting comments! It’s worth clarifying that I do watch programmes (usually online) and it’s interesting to try and make a distinction between this and watching TV. I think what I dislike so much about TV is that way many people automatically have it on without wanting to watch anything in particular and the way it’s often a focal point in living rooms. I really do mean this; I hate it when people have their couches/chairs facing the TV rather than each other and I hate it when people ... See more Interesting comments! The ultimate luxury is to have a separate TV room and living room but, seeing as I only have the latter, I certainly do not want a TV in the centre of it. I’m fine with TVs hidden in cupboards and the like and brought out when needed but I do not want them on 24/7 and dominating my life. ▲ Collapse

During breaks | May 8, 2013 |
I break once every hour or so. During that time i may watch some specific channel that helps me relax. When i do routine translations i may still watch programs or stream music from Youtube. As long as it isn't a programme that I might get into or like, because then it distracts me from the task at hand.
Sometimes I have it on a very low volume or even mute if I need to concentrate and if I REALLY need to focus I'll turn it off completely.
I find (lyrical) music far worse to have on while I'm trying to work to be honest.

Even otherwise I watch very little TV. In a family with small kids, TV tends to become exclusively for them, and they watch nothing but cartoons dubbed into Hindi - Doremon is the current favourite. As I don't fancy Doremon much, and since before the children I am always the weaker party, I never get to watch TV any way - so the grapes are sour here - Maybe.

But even when I have access to the TV such as when the children trip to their grandmother's place and leave me to my own devices, I never watch TV when I am translating. In fact, I do no other activity other than translation while translating, not even music. Translation for me is an all engrossing activity which takes up all my brain energy.
The only thing that I combine with TV watching is dinner - I love to watch TV over my food. ▲ Collapse

As a kid I developed a rule of "working during commercials." Honestly, there's nothing on TV anymore that really interests me, aside from what Mario pointed out and maybe the cooking/food channels.
I like having lots of noise while I work. I usually have a youtube playlist in the background or netflix on one of the other monitors. One program that's really got me excited right now is called TEDTalks (Better off Ted is another good one for netflix users ^_^). | | | DianeGM Local time: 09:58 Member (2006) Dutch to English + ...
