Cilian, it's the "up to an angle of 170°" part that's puzzling me here. I'm now wondering whether whether this might actually refer to the "protection". Perhaps I should insert a comma in the English version, so it would read "serves as protection in the event of a rearward crash into the safety barrier and in the event of a rear-end collision, up to an angle of 170°."?

agree Teresa Reinhardt : Strictly speaking, a rear-end collision should be 180 deg., so they are simply providing the limit (here 170 deg. - at some point it will be a side crash, which is a whole different animal in cars)
