German term

Materialisierung

German to English Tech/Engineering Architecture Vernacular
This is in a brochure intended to solicit anchor tenants in a large commercial venue. The sentence reads: "Architektur und Materialisierung unterstreichen diesen Anspruch" (of the project's premium-segment positioning). I know what the word means, but is "materialization" a bona fide term in the architectural community? TIA

Discussion

philgoddard Mar 18, 2010:
In belated reply to your question, "materialization" would be wrong. Also, I wouldn't use the word "exquisite" in this context - it's too over-the-top, the kind of word I'd use for jewelry but not bathroom fittings.
itla (asker) Mar 18, 2010:
@ Helen Thanks, Helen. If you look at my answer to Kim further below in this window, the use of choice materials was my first thought anyway, but I was wondering if there was some fancy single term used by architects. I wasn't comfortable with materialization because that means to become corporeal (ghost, Hamlet). It seems there's no option but to use choice of materials. Have a good day, all!
Helen Shiner Mar 17, 2010:
Finally if only you had given that to start with! Then both answers are correct, but you had better go with Phil's answer for the sake of the flow of the text. There is no absolute sense in the word itself of the exquisite nature of the materials, but personally I would add something along those lines: choice/premium/fine etc.
itla (asker) Mar 17, 2010:
@ Helen Here's the entire text under the heading "The project": "Exklusivität: Der Mietermix, ausschliesslich bestehend aus Anbietern höchstwertiger Dienstleistungen, sichert eine deutliche Positionierung im Premium-Segment. Architektur und Materialisierung unterstreichen diesen Anspruch."
Helen Shiner Mar 17, 2010:
@ itla You forget you can see how the word is being used and we can't. Please if you want help, provide some to your willing helpers!!
itla (asker) Mar 17, 2010:
@ Helen It's not that I don't want to offer surrounding sentences, I just don't think they would contribute to anyone's understanding of my question. An analogy: "The interior design of the rooms and the hotel's amenities justify the rather steep rates." No attributes here. "Materialisierung" (with no attributes) implies exquisite materials and I suspect there must be an architectural euphemism in English that has the same flavor, ultimately. I just can't warm up to "materialization". If only the phrase material exquisitization existed!
Helen Shiner Mar 17, 2010:
Hi itla Materialization is not, to my knowledge, a standard term. Without more context - and you give hardly any at all - I would understand the term to be 'to give material form' to something. Related to choice of materials but obviously has a much broader meaning. But then I can't see the surrounding paragraph or even sentences.
Kim Metzger Mar 17, 2010:
That's what came to mind. Thanks.
itla (asker) Mar 17, 2010:
@ Kim Oh, sure: it means that only choice materials are used. Stainless steel, marble, hand-tufted carpets, stuff like that.
Kim Metzger Mar 17, 2010:
itla I'm glad you know what it means. Could you give us a hint?

giving material form to

...something.

This is how it is usually translated, but without context, I am giving this a low confidence score, but only because of the lack of context.
