French term

matrice

French to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng MEMS
Context:
Commutateur MEMS à écran de tension et matrice de commutateurs MEMS à écran de tension
As usual a PR task and this has been translated variously as "matrix" or "array".

Confirmation of which one is correct would be appreciated.

TIA Chris.

Bashiqa (asker) Dec 18, 2023:
@ All I have found a similar patent: A micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) switch array for power switching includes an input node, an output node, and a plurality of MEMS switches,
So switch array will suit me fine.
Thank you, Chris.

@ Daryo and all Bourth:

"A declared 3,620 ghits for 'MEMS switch matrix"
"A declared 3,710 ghits for 'MEMS switch array'"

Daryo (neutral):

Maybe searching for "array vs matrix" in microchip design instead of counting ghits "tout contextes confondus" would yield more significant / meaningful results? Just an idea ...

Bourth's response: I think 'MEMS switch matrix' (or 'array') is pretty specific.

Me: I'm with Bourth on this. Your constant neutrals and disagrees based on remarks like this is just mind-boggling.

First some definitions:

A microarray is a multiplex lab-on-a-chip.[1] Its purpose is to simultaneously detect the expression of thousands of biological interactions. It is a two-dimensional array on a solid substrate

Multiplexed displays are electronic display devices where the entire display is not driven at one time.
Instead, sub-units of the display (typically, rows or columns for a dot matrix display or individual characters for a character oriented display, occasionally individual display elements) are multiplexed, that is, driven one at a time, but the high switching frequency and the persistence of vision combine to make the viewer believe the entire display is continuously active.

MEMS — Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems
:
They can sense tiny changes in their environment, be it motion, air pressure, magnetism, or even gases in the air. They relay this information as an electrical signal, making them the sensory organs of the technological world.

"Commutator" "MEMS" Approximately 137,000 results (0.29 seconds)
"MEMS switch "Approximately 102,000 results (0.24 seconds)
"MEMS switch array" Approximately 3,440 results (0.28 seconds)

MEMS applications include the following areas:
— Microoptoelectromechanics (displays, adaptive optics, optical microcommutators, fast-response scanners for cornea inspection, diffraction gratings with an electrically tunable step, controlled two- and three-dimensional arrays of micromirrors, etc.)
— RF devices (RF commutators, tunable filters and antennas, phased antenna arrays, etc.)

Production of the first lot of the arrays of optical commutators (CrossFiber) with a dimension of M × N light fibers (up to 128 pieces in an array) with a cost of 50 dollars per optical input with a possibility of arranging arbitrary switching configurations was recently announced

As compared with semiconductor switches, high-frequency MEMS commutators have extremely low losses with simultaneous high insulation of all components, high linearity, and low power consumption.

Abstract:
This paper reports on a microelectromechanical (MEMS) switch array with up to 20x20 double switches embedded and packaged on a single chip and utilized for automating main distribution frames in copper-wire telecommunication networks. The device includes 5x5 or 20x20 double-switches, allowing for an any-to-any interconnection of the specific input line to the specific output line.

This paper investigates the application of microelectromechanical system (MEMS) switches for DC power distribution system.
:
The simulated result of the proposed MEMS switch array configuration is compared with the traditional switches. The comparative study shows that the proposed switch array configuration gives better performance in terms of voltage drop, leakage current, power loss, arc and size

Context 1
... Table 2 shows the summary of technical specifications of a single MEMS series switch. The design of RF MEMS switch array requires large number of switches. The schematic for (2x2) and (4x4) switch arrays designed are as shown in Figure 5 to Figure 7.

matrix

Both appear to be said. I assume 'array' and 'matrix' mean the same thing, i.e. that an 'array' could not be something other than a 'matrix'. However, since you have matrice, it might be safer to go down the 'matrix' road.

"Consider for a moment that hundreds of MEMS switch contacts can be fit in a space smaller than a single EMR or reed relay, and a MEMS switch matrix housed in a small surface-mount package can replace multiple EMRs (Figure 1)."
