I just received an email from Proz Premium Jobs through the Proz.com Connect! Jobs system.
The job in question advertises a rate that I would never even consider working for (please note that I am not saying that it is too low, but simply that as a translator based in France I personally will never work for that rate). In the description of this system it says:

"In particular, members will see opportunities appearing that are marked specifically as "Premium Jobs". We will apply a certain standard to these opportunities, so that members are not inconvenienced by notification concerning opportunities that are in fact not relatively desirable."
I'm curious what certain standard is applied? Who decides what jobs are good opportunities for me and what criteria is applied to dertemine this? Is there anyway I can opt out of receiving these emails directly? Because, for the moment anyway, I am certainly inconvenienced by the notifications of the opportunities presented to me.

On a general note, you may want to take into account that Connect is a relatively new development; as can be expected, some of the specifications and parameters still need fine-tuning. Jobs moderators are working with ProZ.com staff to ensure that the right balance can be found.

You can control receipt of notifications through your Jobs dashboard (go to My ProZ.com - Dashboard - Jobs dashboard). You can switch off specific notifications there, although I would suggest not to dismiss the overall concept of Connect - which I believe is good - on the grounds of a single 'false shot'.
Also, take a look at the relevant FAQ entry:
5. What is a premium job?
A job is considered premium when the project pays at or above market rates for the given language pair, and pays the translator a minimum of €100.
6. Who decides whether or not a job is to be classified as "premium"?
For now, Connect! clients have been asked to determine for themselves whether a job qualifies as "premium" according to the definition above.
If you feel a job has been posted as premium and the above conditions have not been met, please enter a support ticket, citing the specific post with a URL.
Please do contact site staff, letting them know this was not a 'premium' job. Thanks.

Thanks for your quick response. I realize the concept is new, so I understand these things happen, but I will do as you suggest and submit a support ticket.
Interesting, though, the concept of premium being at market rates and paying a minimum of 100 dollars - but whose market? I think that is where the problem may lie.

I received notification of a similar "premium" job, initially at well under half of the average *minimum* rate listed at proz.com for my language pair. The rate in the job has now been modified to exactly half of the average target rate per word. I don't have a problem with offering jobs at these rates per se, but I do object to them being categorized as premium. As Ralf says, I don't think we should dismiss the Connect concept overall, but I can't imagine this job is remotely "relatively desirable" for even a fraction of users here:

The job to which you refer was not posted as a "premium" job. Connect gives outsourcers the option to mark jobs as "premium", but not all Connect jobs are "premium". If you saw the word premium somewhere in this job posting, it was a technical oversight--please tell us where so that we can correct it.

I was just about to post the exact same thing as Michele. The message was sent from "Proz.com Premium Jobs", which certainly leads one to believe that the job being described is intended to be Premium.
I think it needs to be made very clear in Connect! whether the jobs are Premium or not.

I just also noticed that other jobs I have received from Connect have come from "Proz.com Connect! Jobs." In such cases it's clear that it's a non-premium job. This one was clearly from Premium Jobs. Are you sure this wasn't actually labeled premium by mistake?
