Hi folks,
I just received an e-mail about a potential job (Italian-English), so I took a look. It is restricted to Platinum members:

The posting is rather vague (doesn't mention the area of expertise required), but I decided to take a look at the BB link at the bottom of the posting.

I was very surprised to find the following proviso at the head of the BB entry page for this agency:
"Would members with payment problems with this agency please contact Jobs Area coordinator."

Now, if there have been so many payment problems, why is this agency nevertheless allowed to post a job? Shouldn't the agency be prevented from posting a job until these problems have been cleared up?

I too saw the rating and asked myself exactly the same question....

After having a look at the BB I couldn't agree more.

No member has ever contacted Jobs Area coordinators Mar 31, 2004

Hi Catherine,

Jobs Area coordinators and Jobs moderators may act only according to ProZ.com termination Policy

http://www.proz.com/policy.php3

We haven't received any "formal" complaint until now.

Giuliana

Dear Catherine,
there is no contradiction.

The Jobs Area moderators have the capability and the authority to ban some outsourcers from using the Jobs Area, and we do it, but only when 2 or 3 translators have provided factual documentation to have provided a service, according to the instructions received, and not have received the payment.

Note: a single complaint is not sufficient, as well as many low ratings in the BB, but 2-3 documented compaints will trigger a procedure, we contact the outsourcer and we may suspend that outsourcer from the privilege of using the ProZ.com Jobs Area.

When we receive the first documented complaint (or occasionally even without it, according to our judgement, if the overall picture emerging from the Blue Board is bleak) we actively seek for more, and the first step is to place a message like the one you have seen on the Blue Board page of that outsourcer.

For more information you can consult the Termination Policy, in
http://www.proz.com/policy.php3

The Jobs Area and Blue Board moderators are available for contact in:
http://www.proz.com/index.php3?sp=mod/list&show_mode=jobs_mods

Another question comes to mind Mar 31, 2004

Giuliana and Gianfranco,
Thank you both for your comments.
What is still unclear to me is why the moderators added the "warning" box at the top of the BB page.
If you have a page with all 1's, does that automatically trigger a warning at the top of the page?
Why is the warning there if no one has complained?

No, and there's a simple reason why: BB ratings need not be substantiated.

Why is the warning there if no one has complained?

Depending on the information we get, we do start investigations on our own initiative. The purpose of a note like the one discussed here is to get people to contact us.

For the very same reason, ProZ.com has added a note inviting people to contact the jobs moderators in case of non-payment; this note is shown to anyone entering a rating of 1 or 2.

Hope that clarifies it.

Best regards, Ralf

BB link updated (correct link entered) Apr 1, 2004

Hi,

(I didn't say anything yesterday, as I was waiting for evidences)

I noticed that there was a slight difference between the name of the agency in the job posting and that reported on the relative BB entry.

I have just received complete contact details, therefore I have edited the BB entry linked to this job and substituted it with the correct BB link.

Sorry for the inconvinience, but the automated matching can't be too strict, otherwise just a few BB entries would be successfully linked to posted jobs (and an -i difference is like a 99% match)

Ignorance more than caution to the wind Apr 1, 2004

I don't think it's a case of throwing caution to the wind, I think it's more that the bidders are non-paying members and therefore have no idea as to how this agency has behaved in the past.

BlueBoard is accessible to non-Platinum members Apr 1, 2004

Hi Mark,
I don't think it's a case of throwing caution to the wind, I think it's more that the bidders are non-paying members and therefore have no idea as to how this agency has behaved in the past.

Why should they be unaware? After all, the BlueBoard is accessible to all members of ProZ.com. Whether they prefer to make a contribution on a case-by-case basis or by paying membership fees is their decision.

Best regards, Ralf
