I didn't start out my career as a translator. I worked as a secretary during my university studies and after I graduated, I had a lot of different jobs (civil servant, hotel manager, public relations officer, advertising account executive, vocational trainer). I do not regret at all this intricate weaving as it gave me a valuable insight of different areas of business. I was working in food industry 20 years ago, but decided to quit due to lack of empowerment and incentives.. joined the army shortly afterwards.. got fully empowered with rifles and ammunition and in my new-found authority as drill sergeant to bully young hapless conscripts, but the pay was shit...
After the army I started working as an in-house translator and did that for 10 years till I got fired in 2017, and here I am.
