I have studied and worked with languages throughout my life. I hold an MA from Oxford University in Literae Humaniores incorporating the so-called dead languages of Latin and Ancient Greek with plenty of history and philosophy thrown in.
My experience in the region of former Yugoslavia started in 1997 when as a reservist soldier I volunteered for an intensive "Serbo-Croat" language course followed by a six-month tour of Bosnia where I used my language skills for translations and interpreting when for whatever reason we did not want to use a local interpreter.
My expertise in all matters business, economics and finance stems from 12 years working in London as an accountant and finance professional. Since moving to Croatia, I have had many articles published in The Banker, Euromoney and other publications which points not only to my level of expertise but also my clear writing style.
Before returning to the UK in 2016, I lived in Croatia for 15 years. I initially worked there as a freelance journalist but as I perfected my Croatian, I was offered more and more translation work and eventually set myself up as a full-time freelance translator in November 2005 although my experience in translation in Croatia dates back to 2003 (plus 13 months in Bosnia in 1997 and 1999). I haven't altogether stopped my journalism work so if you would like some original copy, I can do that too.
Most of my translation work has been business-related, translating reports, press releases, project documentation and even laws. I have a passionate interest in history and politics/current affairs and 11 years service as a reservist in the military, so I am well-qualified to translate in these fields too.
I also have experience in the field of art and architecture having translated two monographs and I regularly copy-edit and proofread an architecture magazine. My Croatian wife is an academy-trained artist so expert help is immediately on hand!
It goes without saying that I am very used to meeting deadlines and working to tight time lines if necessary.
I am an Associate of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting.
