English to Spanish: Essay Extract on Speech Adaptation Theory General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Linguistics
Source text - English In the transcription of the conversation, several prosodic features were looked at to determine whether or not SAT does in fact explain the change in speaking style. The focused linguistic features will be of cut-off speech, discourse markers and affiliation markers as these were the most apparent adaptations as evidenced in the data sets. However, the data did not provide evidence of intonation, emphasis and utterance length as adapted characteristics. The chosen excerpts provide evidence of a speech pattern adaptations by Speaker A (SA), myself, from Speaker B (SB) and Speaker C (SC), my conversation partners. Within these excerpts one can see examples of an uninfluenced utterance of SA, and an influenced utterance after exposure to SB and SC’s speech patterns. It has to be noted that because all participants are around the same age group, certain prosodic similarities will become apparent in the utterances due to the commonalities shared within the “youth speech-style” subculture.
