Source text - English [...] “I have a proposal.” It leaned forward like my friend April does when she wants to tell a secret, even though none of her secrets are any good. Or even really secrets. “If you don’t tell anyone I am here, I can fix your eyes.”
“Get out of town!”
It blinked a couple of times. “That is what I am attempting to do.”
“What I mean is you can’t do that!”
“Why not?”
“Well, no one else has been able to fix my eyes, besides with glasses.”
“I have certain abilities. You will see, provided…”
“…I don’t tell anyone about you?”
“That is the heart of it, that is the nub.”
“How do I know you won’t blind me? You could be like one of those telemarketers making promises but totally lying.”
It started waxing on, waxing off again. “I would not do such a thing to a creature who has done me no harm.”
“Meaning if I harmed you, you could make me go blind?”
“That’s on a need-to-know basis.”
“And if you fix my eyes, and I don’t tell anyone about you, you’ll leave our fields?”
“That’s the heart of it!” [...]
Translation - Bengali [...] “আমার একটি প্রস্তাব আছে।“ কথাটা বলার সময় সেটি সামনের দিকে ঝুঁকে এলো, ঠিক আমার বন্ধু এপ্রিলের মতো যখন সে আমাকে গোপন কিছু বলতে চায়, যদিও তার গোপন কথার মধ্যে গোপন বলে কিছুই থাকে না। এমনকি সেগুলোকে গোপন না বললেও চলে। “তুমি যদি কাউকে না বলো আমি এখানে আছি, আমি তোমার চোখ ঠিক করে দিতে পারি”
“মজা করছ!”
এটি কয়েকবার চোখের পাতা ফেলল। “সেটাই তো আমি করার চেষ্টা করছি।”
“আমি বলতে চাচ্ছি যে তুমি এটা করতে পারবে না!”
“কেন পারবো না?”
“আচ্ছা, চশমা ছাড়া আর কেউই আমার চোখ ঠিক করতে পারেনি।”
“আমার কিছু বিশেষ ক্ষমতা আছে। তুমি দেখতে পাবে, যদি…”
“…আমি তোমার সম্পর্কে কাউকে না বলি?”
“এটাই মূল কথা, এটাই শর্ত।”
“আমি কীভাবে জানবো তুমি আমাকে অন্ধ করে দেবে না? তুমি তো সেই টেলিমার্কেটারদের মতো হতে পারো, যারা প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়ে মিথ্যা বলে।”
এটি আবার বকবক শুরু করল। “আমি কোনো প্রাণীর সাথে এমন কিছু করবো না, যে আমার কোনো ক্ষতি করেনি।”
“মানে, যদি আমি তোমার ক্ষতি করি, তুমি আমাকে অন্ধ করে দিতে পারো?”
“সেটা ক্ষেত্রবিশেষে প্রযোজ্য”
“আর যদি তুমি আমার চোখ ঠিক করো, এবং আমি তোমার সম্পর্কে কাউকে না বলি, তুমি আমাদের ক্ষেত ছেড়ে চলে যাবে?”
