English to Spanish: Effect of sun exposure and vegetal cover on woodpecker nest orientationin subtropical forest from South America General field: Science Detailed field: Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-)
Translation - Spanish In this work, we examine the nest orientation of the Dot-fronted Woodpecker (Veniliornis frontalis) in a subtropical location in the Southern hemisphere of the Neotropical realm. Assessing whether there are coverage (protection) effects in nest orientation. Taking into account previous works on this topic, we wonder if the orientation of covered and uncovered nests is random. Based on the hypothesis that the average annual temperatures affect the cavity entrance orientation (Wiebe 2001; Landler et al. 2014), we would expect uncovered nests to be oriented Southwards to avoid solar overexposure; while covered nests to be randomly oriented given that the surrounding vegetation protects them from solar radiation.
