Literary text relating to games and video games
The text required or at least benefitted from a combination of: literary writing, copywriting principles, knowledge of gaming, general familiarity with core notions of art history and social history. It was a piece of forceful but engaging writing, in simple language and with bold headers but lean paragraphs, and with very idiosyncratic word choices on the part of its author, a highly educated and intelligent native speaker (professor, CEO and visionary).

Polish to English: Criminal law (continuous offence, drugs, conditional intent) General field: Law/Patents Detailed field: Law (general)
Translation - English It is not necessary to demonstrate and prove that the already on the onset of his criminal activity did the defendant know in advance on what specific day and in what specific place he would dispense a specific quantity of a given type of drug for a set price to specific persons, but it is only necessary to demonstrate that the perpetrator wanted to commit a continuous offence or, foreseeing the possibility of committing such an offence, consented to it and took advantage of every opportunity that was presenting itself to continue to engage in the selling of them for material gain.

[K. T. Boratyńska (w:) K. T. Boratyńska i in., Kodeks postępowania karnego. Komentarz, Legalis, teza nr 2 do art. 175;]
Translation - English (…) [T]he defendant's exercise of his right to silence may not be regarded as: (1) a silent confession of guilt, since the presumption of innocence applies; (2) reinforcement of the suspicion of the defendant's commission of the crime; (3) grounds for more severe sentencing.

English to Polish: ICCY ruling on interpretation of criminal statutes General field: Law/Patents Detailed field: Law: Contract(s)
Source text - English The effect of strict construction of the provisions of a criminal statute is that where an equivocal word or ambiguous sentences leaves a reasonable doubt of its meaning which the canons of construction fail to solve, the benefit of the doubt should be given to the subject and against the legislature which has failed to explain itself. This is why ambiguous criminal statutes are to be construed contra proferentem.
Polish to English: Lawyer's take on civil litigation rules in a contract suit General field: Law/Patents Detailed field: Law: Contract(s)
Translation - English In confronting the inquiry with the facts, it must be noted that doubt arises as to what the consequences are of a debtor's filing of a complaint against the challenged order even before the commencement of the time-window prescribed by Article 795 § 2 of the Code of Civil Procedure.
It is a view held correctly by the Voivodship Court, as expressed in the opinion justifying its order, that the complaint filed is not subject to rejection on the ground of the inadmissibility mentioned in Article 372 in connection with Article 397 §2 of the Code of Civil Procedure. This because the Supreme Court subscribes to the view expressed in the literature that a ruling is appealable from its passing. It is therefore permissible to challenge a ruling when it has been passed.
The permissibility of challenging a sentence following its passing but prior to the service of that sentence together with the court's opinion on the party challenging, is not excluded by Article 371 § 1 of the Code of Civil Procedure, which provides for a two-week time-window to file for review, calculating from the day of service of the sentence and opinion on the party challenging, as neither from the aforementioned Article nor from Article 372 of the Code of Criminal Proceedings does it follow that filing for review prior to the service on the party of the ruling and opinion is a ground of rejection.

Translation - English I will address in this paper the issue of the alleged reception of sources through the prism of the Bohemian and the Polish etnomyth. Has the Anonym's wish for his work to be read and interpreted in schools and castles been granted? The practical functioning of the Cronice et gesta ducum sive principium Polonorum and the Boemorum chronica remains an unresolved matter. In examining the enigma of reception, it is worth pondering for what audience the chronicles were intended. Most probably, the first recipients, and at the same time the first moderators of the content, were individuals nominated by the sponsor or even the sponsors themselves (in all probability, the chronicles were the product of hired work). In the Anonym's case one possible candidate is Chancellor Michael. From the work of the Canon of Prague it follows indirectly that he, Cosmas, was court chronicler to Duke Vladislaus I and for a time also Duke Sobeslav I. Cosmas makes no mention of any expectation of reward, but rather in one of his chapters he reiterated his intention to continue his work and asked to be enabled to do so (III, 59), even while pleading at the same time with the Muse to be relieved of that difficult duty.

Łukasz Gos-Furmankiewicz is a legal translator based in Warsaw, Poland. Accredited as a sworn translator by Polish Ministry of Justice, following rigorus state examination in both English-Polish and Polish-English. Law school and translation school at the University of Warsaw. Graduate of the Centre for American Law Studies at the same university, a collaborative project with the University of Florida Levin College of Law. Completed Ph.D. programme, dissertation pending, rounding out 12 years of legal education that did not lead to legal practice as a career. Active blog writer and conference speaker.
Typical workload of this translator includes (plenty of):
contracts
corporate governance
statutes, regulations, policies
opinions, memos, advice
public procurement
litigation and courts
law firms and their activities
law reviews and the academia
… across the following areas of business activity and legal practice:
realty & construction
transport
energy
IT
banking, insurance, taxation
events, media, internet
administration, public utilities
employment, social responsibility
As a Latin translator, Łukasz Gos has mostly translated texts relating to history, religion and the law, from a mediaeval patent of nobility and arms from the Holy Roman Chancery or Florentine guild charaters, through renaissance court cases or Polish-Lithuanian property conveyance, down to documents issued by modern Church authorities. On the lighter side, he has once translated a menu card for a pharma party into Latin (but did not get a token copy, despite asking).
Even between Polish and English he takes care not to be just a law grad repackaged as a legal translator. Some of his more exotic past translations include published notes from a round-the-world biking tour, catalogue entries for underwater photo equipment, anniversary stories for a sports car manufacturer, articles relating to social and political changes in the 20th century, or an entire dating portal repurposed for the social-media needs of a community of young patients with diabetes and their parents. He has also translated copy for LSPs as end clients.
Underneath it all, he has a gamer's heart, knowing how to rush and swerve and save a galaxy or keep back the Mongol hordes and do a couple of other cool things that normal people don't have much enthusiasm for. His gaming past includes a tour of duty as the head news editor of a large community portal, among other things too many to list. His current focus is on the grand strategy and car racing genres, with some adventure titles, RPGs and historical economic simulators down the pipeline, waiting for a longer holiday.
Familiar with hardware, too, he feels at ease diving under the desk with a Philips screwdriver in hand, which allows to forget about the outside world for a couple of hours (or days). No longer an active coder, he nonetheless continues to believe that legal drafting and computer programming are essentially two faces of the same thing and to treat programming languages a bit like real-world languages, and sometimes the other way round; no abuse of semicolons, though. Not solely a coder, at some point he also became familiar with core principles of web design.
His secret dream is to become a professional gamer and live off of tournament winnings, which would make translation no longer a necessity. Unfortunately, with age reflexes fade, no matter how much coffee you drink.
