I don't know if my situation is unique but I decided as many of you have seen in my previous posts to gain experience in the field through starting out in a master's program in Translation Studies. I don't know if my situation is unique but I decided as many of you have seen in my previous posts to gain experience in the field through starting out in a master's program in Translation Studies. The translating I did was from Spanish into English and from Portuguese into English. I am finding out there is a high demand for English into Spanish and English into Portuguese. I am looking into getting certified in those language pairs but many of the certification programs include a lot of the courses I have already taken in my Master's program. I want a certification program that mainly teaches how to translate into those language pairs. Can anyone recommend a program? So far I have found a program called Certified Translation Professional Program but I am not sure if that would be a good one that trains you on how to translate into those languages. Another thing is many of the programs ask you to be native. I am not a native in the languages but I could pass as near-native. I don't intend to do interpreting but just translating. I just feel it would be a huge asset to translate in both directions. Now, I have had many people in the past be really rude on posting feedback so I ask people to only give suggestions on programs for certification rather than give their opinions on how I got my translation experience in the Master's program or me not being a native. The focus of this post is certification programs and I want to keep the focus on that. Thanks.Collapse

I cannot suggest any certification programs because... Dec 16, 2024

...they aren't comparable to a university or college degree in translating from one language to the other. Certification programs of that type in the U.S. usually last 10-12 months. The only certification I would pursue is a standard ATA certification or equivalents by ITI or similar professional associations.

I don't know of any programmes that would teach you to translate in a particular direction but you could take the ATA exam for those pairs or do a DipTrans.

Certified Translation Professional Program, the certificate factory? Dec 16, 2024

So far I have found a program called Certified Translation Professional Program but I am not sure if that would be a good one that trains you on how to translate into those languages.

If you mean this one:

You should not expect much of the effectiveness of the certificate they issue. It is just another piece of paper to be framed and hung on the wall. In 21 years of being in this trade, I have never heard of a customer asking for or recognizing it as a valuable certificate.

As other colleagues have suggested, go for the ATA certification or the DipTrans.
