An article in Saturday's Guardian by David Edgars looks at the history of the translation of the Bible in the UK and what befell its translators, and at its influence on the modern language.

Very useful! There's also a book on the same topic: The Adventure of English by Melvyn Bragg. I got it from the local library and was so absorbed in reading that decided to translate the entire book into my native language.
