An article in Saturday's Guardian by David Edgars looks at the history of the translation of the Bible in the UK and what befell its translators, and at its influence on the modern language.
I found it fascinating.

Very useful! There's also a book on the same topic: The Adventure of English by Melvyn Bragg. I got it from the local library and was so absorbed in reading that decided to translate the entire book into my native language.

What a well written and stimulating article. Thank you Gilla.

There was a programme on the same subject on BBC4 this evening, which elaborates on the historical context. It will shortly be available on iPlayer: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00yvs8n/When_God_Spoke_English_The_Making_of_the_King_James_Bible/

though I believe this is only accessible in the UK (I recently downloaded an iPlayer programme and sent it to a friend in France via Skype but it was still blocked).
