And I was delighted to find that the same couple (I assume) translate the books of Haruki Murakami and of Matt Ruff into German, and I think they're doing an excellent job: Here's to you, Giovanni & Ditte Bandini.

Brazilian translator known primarily for Shakespeare's translations.
I used to write for a newspaper and, in 1997, I interviewed Barbara Heliodora and got the chance to ask her what she had found about the Baz Luhrmann's film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Famous translators who come to mind are Gregory Rabassa (mentioned already), Vladimir Nabokov, Samuel Putnam, Harriet de Onis. A glance at famous translators on the Internet reminds me that a number of great writers were also translators.
I also admire the contributions of Eugene Nida.
For my thesis, I studied 32 published translations from Portuguese to English, and I found that a number of them were excellent.
