Hallo everybody,
I know it's probably a little too premature, but since I've learnt of this conference I'm daydreaming of the possible ways to reach Ohrid.
It's located in a part of the Balkans I haven't seen yet, so I'm planning to reach it via Tirana or Athens or Sofia* by car if someone wants to travel with me and share the expenses (we might rent a car, I am not travelling by car from Italy, although I might be capable of doing something like that... Otherwise, I'll jump on a bus or train in one of the aforementioned cities.
Anyone interested?
Paola

Reportedly there's a direct bus service from Tirana to Ohrid, taking 4 to 5 hours. This service drops you off at a place called Struga, from where you have to take a taxi to Ohrid proper.

Dear Paola,
I just realized that this is not a general Travel forum dedicated to this conference, but a single thread with the title "Travel".
Sorry for messing this up. Once the "official" Travel forum will be up and running, my posts here can be moved there.

Ciao, Paola,
This happened over a couple of decades ago, but it taught me a lesson. I don't know if with the EC all rental cars have a TT license or not. The idea may be interesting if you want to drive all the way there, but return by plane.

This happened over a couple of decades ago, but it taught me a lesson. I don't know if with the EC all rental cars have a TT license or not. The idea may be interesting if you want to drive all the way there, but return by plane.
What happened to me then was that I would go to England, Israel, and then Italy and Switzerland. The problem was that I would fly into Rome, drive all the way to Zurich, and from there fly back home (Brazil). If I took an Italian car to Switzerland, they would charge me (in those days) USD 400 extra, for fuel, toll, and a driver to take it back. So I made a reservation for a cheap Fiat Panda at Hertz. It was then the most internationally widespread rental car company.
Every time I had contact with Hertz (England, Israel), I showed them my voucher for Italy, and told them "If you have a Swiss car in Italy, tell your colleagues to leave it at Fiumicino airport, I'll drive it back for you.".
When I landed there, they had a shiny 4-door Opel Rekord with all the options waiting for me. I would pay only the Fiat Panda rates, some nice free upgrade. The license plates were from Lucerne, but they'd be very happy (and wouldn't charge anything extra) if I dropped it off at the Zurich airport.
Maybe this will work for you. Just an idea. Italian and Brazilian drivers can get anywhere. Berlitz's travel guides to both countries contain exactly the same phrase: "To drive there you must have nerves of steel." ▲ Collapse | | | Paola Dentifrigi Italy Local time: 16:12 Member (2003) English to Italian + ... The program is very interesting!
I'm looking forward to take part in the conference! Is an official (written) invitation necessary?
Thank you!

Hi !!! I gave a look at a map and I saw it could be a nice idea to take a ferry form Brindisi to Patra (Patrasso) and travel by car from there ...
And eventually to come back via Croatia and stopping here and there to enjoy sea and beaches ...
what do you think?
Anybody any suggestion???

Hi Paola and Elda,
I am considering to fly Cuneo-Tirana and I would really appreciate it if we could share a car or travel together with the bus or whatever from Tirana to Ohrid.
Reaching Skopje from Italy is really difficult and expensive...
Would anybody else be joining us? Possibly Marta from Switzerland?
Nicole
