Spanish term

comparsas

Spanish to English Art/Literary Folklore
A text about the importance of Carnival to the origin of kitsch in Cuban art:

De leer las crónicas de época sobre el carnaval, desde el siglo XVII: la ironía de los “cantos de pullas”, el despliegue travestista, las vendettas personales a “filosos cuchillos”, la sofocación deambulatoria, la acidez crítica de sus “teatros de relaciones”, la epicidad sangrienta de las jefaturas de comparsas...

I think these are troupes of dancers in costume.

Thanks

agree Jenni Lukac (X) : I agree - use the term and give an explanation. You too!

Thanks Jenni:-) Enjoy your weekend.
agree George Rabel : Agree with Jenni. It IS a dance troupe, but that alone is too generic

Many thanks George. Enjoy your weekend!
agree Noni Gilbert Riley : Yes. It is not simply a dance troupe and to use that term alone would be misleading, or at least fall short of giving the entire explanation.

Thanks Noni, you're right of course. Enjoy your weekend.
agree Charles Davis : OK, but I do think you need something more for the benefit of readers who don't know what it is. Something like "conga groups in (elaborate/gaudy) costumes, known as comparsas", perhaps. Certainly not "dance troupes", I agree.

Thanks Charles. Indeed, a short explanation can be woven into sentence. Enjoy your weekend
