Discussion

Danae Lucia Ferri Dec 22, 2012:
Κολάνι είναι η λέξη που χρησιμοποιούν στην Κύπρο για τον ιμάντα, πχ "κολάνι του τάιμερ" (στο αυτοκίνητο) είναι ο ιμάντας χρονισμού.

Ok, thanks ! I guess I will use that, even if I have doubts about the rest of the paragraph i.e. " όλα τα πιο πάνω πλοία που μεταφέρουν Σόγια, Σιτηρά, Αλάτι, Μαρμαροψιφίδα, Κάρβουνο, Παλιοσίδερα, Χώμα, Πεντονίτη, Άμμο, και παρόμοιου τύπου φορτία, η Ζώα" and also the crabs. I will try and turn the title around somehow.. Thank you for the help!!

Ι found this:-
....των υποζυγίων το βάρος και τις δυνάμεις του φορτίου που συχνά ξεπερνούσε ... Το κολάνι είναι μια λουρίδα που περνά πίσω στο ζώο και ενώνεται με το σαμάρι....
It sounds as if, when transporting animals, they belt them, i.e. they pass a belt around the backside of the animal, tied onto the saddle and I assume onto the body of the ship, as well, so the animal is supported from swaying all over the place on the way. So, 'belt' sounds good to me. BUT 'crabs'????
Mirella Naumburg (asker) Dec 21, 2012:
there are some spelling mistakes indeed but I am not sure about this one..
especially when they explain below what the ship carries...
transphy Dec 21, 2012:
Hardly any relation of 'κολάνι' and 'crabs'!!!Are you sure it's 'crabs' and not 'grabs'?
I'll come back to you. Let me look it up
Mirella Naumburg (asker) Dec 21, 2012:
Ok I got the notes ;-) There is no more text regarding "κολάνι" but the one I added below. Which makes it strange as it mentions a cargo of wheat, charcoal etc. and animals. What about crabs, has that got a another meaning that could be related to belts or something like that?
transphy Dec 21, 2012:
See my notes. Belt is not just for what you and I wear around our waist. It could be for anything on a bigger scale which look or function like a belt. You might have seen Lorries, with 'soft' sides, which have 'ties' they tie the soft sides down not to flap in the wind, with metal buckles, which adjust and tighten the 'ties', 'belts' to the hooks on the platform of the lorry. It could be the same on the ship.
Mirella Naumburg (asker) Dec 21, 2012:
Hi there, what do you mean exactly by belt? Am I missing something here? What does it refer to exactly, if it is a belt?

Very ambiguous why cargo ''με κολάνι''. I suppose it may be referring to cargo which is 'tied' with adjustable belts onto the body of the ship, so it does not move when the ship sails. if there is any more text please show it to confirm the meaning. Purely and simply on its own *κολάνι=belt*. If you want to use the verb for 'κολάνι' you should use 'belted' (on or onto.....)

neutral transphy : In Cypriot Greek, Andras, it's normal to say 'κολάνι' for 'belt' The Bulgarians use it, too. I think it may come from the Turkish word ''kolan''.
